Just about every one whos been a round for a while will have heard the saying " you have to spend money to make money" You have to spend money wisely, Would you let the government handle your company finances? I haven't yet seen anything from the government (or the last) that looks like improving the current situation , yet they will waste 30 million on something that has almost zero exposure. |

Just about every one whos been a round for a while will have heard the saying " you have to spend money to make money" So looking at the AC -- (these are only figures pulled out of the air at random) Lets say the Govt "give" 40 Million, in return that money generates 60 Million in returns, overseas countries contracting NZ to do tasks etc -so there is a $20 million Profit which can be put towards something else - Eg Health care. Its well known that NZ has a great Rep for boat building. Now - Spend the same 40 Million straight into health care -- How much profit will they get back -- Nothing- it will have cost them 40 Mil. You have to remember pouring money into something that returns no profit is only dragging the overall status even lower -- whats the option - Raise taxes -- Yeah that'll go down real well with everyone. Basically it has to be run as a business. The problem with this argument where the taxpayer funds these types of "events" is that any so called "profit" does not come back to the govt (read "the taxpayers who lay out the cash to start with"), but instead goes into related industries (boat building, hospitality, etc.). The *actual* return, is any TAXES paid on any extra income generated, which is substantially lower than the numbers loudly quoted by the fanboy's and industry wonk's, trying to justify why their snouts should be in the public trough... So a very rough look at the numbers in your example, a 40 mil "investment" with a 60 mil "return" (optimistic in this case I rekon) generates ~20 mill of tax (assuming it's all eventually taxable) - about half what was originally spent. Doesn't sound like profit to me. |

If the powers that be stated they wanted 800 extra operations in the next two years and here's 30million to make it happen (because we saved it by not splashing it on a vanity project that no one else in the entire world will ever hear about) then that's 800 people who have had their quality of life improved. The difference between a worthy cause and just burning money is quite clear. If people want there quality of life improved, their will move to Australia..... |

| 1355030 | 2013-10-06 18:04:00 | And don't forget that it the governments puts in 30 or 40 million its spread over the 4 years of the cup. So we are really talking about 10 million a year. |

| 1355031 | 2013-10-06 18:57:00 | Well the schmoozing is underway ,$30/$40 mill will not do it this time even though they supposedly what to strip costs out with smaller boats, expect them to ask for double that figure as some key sponsors will be enticed elsewhere Don't expect Larry to change a winning combo or any undercover secrets as I'm Larry and have $40 Billion to throw at it to make sure I win again TNZ are copying the same tactics as down trodden groups here, you need to throw money at it for a better outcome(IE-"we need to secure the team members before they get approached from other teams),sounds like the Greens (doom and gloom) Sorry I don't buy this crap |

If people had some faith in the Government they wouldn't be so inclined to withdraw their support and leave, Taking their expertise and earning capacity with them which further reduces NZ's abilities. That is the problem facing NZ, Not lack of public money for an obscure yacht race. |
