Healthcare and education are the two most important 'services' for any good government with, responsible and efficient leaders. Get your priorities right, 'luxury' sports come last in the list. Wrong again. The two most important things a goverment should do is Customs (border security) and Defence. Who said a goverment should pay for education or health? The UK went for 2,000 years without doing that, its only in the last 150 years that governments took taxes and spent them on health and education. |

| 1355019 | 2013-10-05 20:57:00 | Indeed. Just because they've forked out the nose for Treaty claims to the tune of a billion dollars doesn't mean another XYZ million should be blown. Two wrongs don't make a right. Two wrongs dont make a right, thats true. But throwing billions into treaty claims and getting next to nothing back from them apart from more claims, doesn't make any work either. Since all these billions have been poured into them, what has improved -- Not a lot - lots of families dont see any improvements, many are still in poverty, nothing changes, apart from the fat pricks in charge getting fatter wallets. At least with the AC theres more chance of getting a return in many areas both now and the future. If spending the same amount of money would make a big difference to services in NZ, then Id agree, but it wont. The Govt could spend millions more on health care and not a lot would change. |

| 1355021 | 2013-10-06 04:06:00 | How so ? Because Health is a bottomless pit. If you throw more money at it, the expectations of the public increase, requiring even more money to be found for hospitals, doctors, nurses, equipment. People are always going to require some form of healthcare (same as there are always going to be a road toll, no matter how safe you make cars or how low you make the speed limit) - increasing spend in healthcare will not make everyone magically well... |

| 1355022 | 2013-10-06 04:19:00 | If our money is good enough for rio tinto and warner brothers, it's good enough for TNZ. After all the money was given because the government was going to see a return on it. Key at the moment is spending god knows how much on foreign aid all in hope of gaining a seat on the UN Security Council, which if we don't get we won't see any return on. | plod (107) | ||
| 1355023 | 2013-10-06 05:41:00 | True but healthcare isn't the only thing it could be spent on. Look at how the Govt skimped on the FTTH project by comparison.. A few extra million in that deal may go a long way. The possibilities are endless... | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||

A few extra million in that deal may go a long way. The possibilities are endless... Theres always good and bad points to where spending is placed. Just about every one whos been a round for a while will have heard the saying " you have to spend money to make money" So looking at the AC -- (these are only figures pulled out of the air at random) Lets say the Govt "give" 40 Million, in return that money generates 60 Million in returns, overseas countries contracting NZ to do tasks etc -so there is a $20 million Profit which can be put towards something else - Eg Health care. Its well known that NZ has a great Rep for boat building. Now - Spend the same 40 Million straight into health care -- How much profit will they get back -- Nothing- it will have cost them 40 Mil. You have to remember pouring money into something that returns no profit is only dragging the overall status even lower -- whats the option - Raise taxes -- Yeah that'll go down real well with everyone. Basically it has to be run as a business. |

If the powers that be stated they wanted 800 extra operations in the next two years and here's 30million to make it happen (because we saved it by not splashing it on a vanity project that no one else in the entire world will ever hear about) then that's 800 people who have had their quality of life improved. The difference between a worthy cause and just burning money is quite clear. |
