| 1355934 | 2013-10-13 21:03:00 | The problem is we need proper public transport across Auckland - not just round the CBD. Not everyone works in the CBD. Buses don't even run after 7pm in some suburbs, going from one to another - West to SOuth or West to North for instance, requires a ridiculous amount of actual buses, stops, walks in between and hours of travel time. It's not even cheap and takes longer than going by car. In some cases it's not possible at all. I was asked by tourists once about visiting Akld without a car.....how easy would it be for them to tour various scattered places on public transport....well.....not.... Yup, that's a basic problem we have in Auckland. The mayor needs to get off his fat a*** and experience first hand the difficulties of getting from A to B. A rail link modeled on a hub and spoke system just isn't going to cut it. Someone wanting to get from Ellerslie to Glen Eden for example (that's if anyone in their right mind would ever want to :D) isn't wanting to patronise a service that takes them into Britomart for a change to Glen Eden. That's why we need the flexibility of a car to take us from Ellerslie to Glen Eden direct. Arguably there's not ever going to be a sound base of commerce to justify any public transport between as an example, those two points. As long as we have the decentralisation of commerce taking people away from the CBD, and the rise of suburban shopping malls all catering to the motorist, public transport is a problem without any foreseeable solution. That's where Wellington has it over Auckland. There's only two main rail corridors, and they work very well because the population and commerce bases are along those corridors. London, Sydney, and as I also posted on earlier, New York, all are fortunate to already have their rail links, subways/tube etc built at a time when the costs were affordable, and politicians able to see into the future. We don't have either the luxury of either money or leadership these days. Move over Los Angeles, Auckland has no option but to emulate you - and your problems. :yuck: |
