1355369 2013-10-07 19:19:00 That's a bit harsh. There are innumerable reasons why a 'winner' may not respond immediately. Yes, it is polite to respond as soon as you can, but TM must have had reasons for suggesting 5 days. I think we should allow a 5 day gap between "polite" and "rude". Some TM folk don't have internet - they have to visit internet cafe or library to check. They may not be checking email every day. I've had sellers not respond for 2 or 3 days even after I've paid almost instantly with PayPal, but I don't see that as rude. Some folk over 65 are subject to life's slowing down events.

I agree with this as well, some people are so fickle.

1355370 2013-10-07 21:10:00 But I bet that its often because the buyer doesnt yet have the cash or is just an too unorganized to get around to it.

Check their feedback, you'll see the last day they logged into trademe.
These buyers often find the time to login to trademe each day, but not to the time answer multiple emails about the goods they just bought.

1355371 2013-10-07 21:25:00 Nah its pretty clear when an auction is going to finish. You should be able to plan to make it to a Cyber Cafe if you don't have internet at home. They've gotta be pretty polite and on the ball with the communication after taking a few days for initial contact or I'll quite happily just leave a :-| face.

That's the difference between "Great trader, instant communication, fast payment, would recommend" vs "Trade went through fine, took a few days for contact and subsequently payment to be made though". I know the "Happy / Sad" rating system that TradeMe use is pretty BS coz nobody likes to leave a ":-(" face coz they'll just do it in return, but tough luck, I'd rather not lie to anybody else you'd be trading with in-future about if you're a "great" vs an "ok" trader.

The ability to simply leave a negative as retribution for earning one due to below-bar action is why the whole feedback system they use sucks, hah. I think it would work better if you had to place your feedback, but it wasn't visible until either the other party had also done so, or some time-out after which neither can add/change their feedback had expired. Thus, you would have to place your feedback without knowing what the other party had done until it's tool ate for you to get retribution.

NO. Short of being in an accident or having some sudden major medical emergency or your house suddenly exploded, there isn't.
You know when you bid what the closing date is.....so there is no other reason for not responding - or asking someone else to respond for you.

Not everyone has more than one computer. Had it many times where customers are all worried because their computer is away being fixed and trade me auctions are about to close while its away.

Not all computer services can be fixed over night, esp if the auction closes on Saturday /Sunday and the PC is spat the dummy on a Friday.

No.

I had this happen the other week - internet became unusable...I gave up in the end and went over to a friends and used his PC.

That's a bit harsh, I've had auctions close over the weekend while we were out of town, (which is what the auto-bid function is there for if you'd paused for a second to think about it) and I've never been criticised for the delay by any seller.

I've never felt the need to carp at any buyer who was slow responding either. I have always assumed that they had a life outside of TM, and once contact was made, they have all turned out to be nice people.

Not everybody sits on their computer all day, some of us have lives to live. I have 100% positive feedback over several hundred trades, so I don't think anybody has been upset with me yet.

Cheers

1355378 2013-10-08 03:53:00 I do, I sit at my PC all day, every day, and everybody should be just like me!

No but really, I'm with inphinity , that's a great idea for the feedback system. Right now if you leave a :-| face or a :-( face the other party usually just updates their feedback to reflect. Neither party should see the others until they're both submitted for that auction, and only once that's done do you get the chance to leave a response. That is all. Would make life *so* much better and the feedback system actually semi-usable.... Coz right now the whole thing is pretty much total BS.

EDIT: Or maybe a rating out of 5 for several components of the trade? Like speed of response, friendliness, goods match description etc
