1354999 2013-10-04 07:17:00 Found a good comment in one of the many stories, even if the figures are off, the point is made.

Interestingly, the yachting industry is worth more to this country than the wine making industry. Considerably more. And although the government gave $30m, they directly received back more than 50m in PAYE and GST. Not to mention the additional spending by staff and company gains, employment, research and development and consequences and spinoffs from the cup in all areas of boat building from design, building and fit-out to the implementation of those technological gains... And then there is the tourism, promotion, contacts and business spin-offs in other areas. I'm not sure how anyone can see this as a bad thing for the country when it brings so much more in return in so many areas.

Even a person who is not so good at maths can figure out this -- Spend 30 odd Mil and get back over 50 Mil = Hmmmm a profit.

Better than the govt pouring god knows how many millions over years and years to another group of people in this country, who claim its their rights -- and no one gets anything in return. ;)

1355000 2013-10-04 08:05:00 No media in the world apart from NZ even mentioned it.

Its a vanity project.

Should have spent the money on the people, paid for some operations, eased some suffering.

I don't think it's that simple, presumably the 50mil is tax from the boat builders etc in the industry. Certainly the Americas cup contributes to that by raising the boat builders profile and helping them sell boats etc etc. How much of that 50 mill is directly due to the cup? 10% ?, 20, 30, 50 ?? no way is it 100% or even close, people build and buy boats with or without the Americas cup. Say it's 50% - a crazy high guess IMO, so without the cup it would have been 25mill but probably more and with the cup it's 50 mill-30 mill = 20 mill so for that year at least it's a loss compared to without the cup.

I know my numbers are wrong and simplistic, I'm just making the point that the returns from it are still not easily shown as a profit overall and could still equal a net loss. Also it doesn't happen every year and the effect would naturally reduce as the race fades from peoples minds. Yet the industry goes on and continues to make profits. What would be useful would be to analyse overall tax income from the industry from the year prior to the cup and then the years following and see if there is any noticeable spike and if so how big and for how long.

1355002 2013-10-04 16:59:00 Pointless numbers.
What we do know is, that NZ is in the fore front in composites, this will pay big dividends, how much?, nobody has told me,.

Yes.
But that doesn't mean we should participate in the racing.
Let's stick to making money from the rich boys toys.

1355004 2013-10-04 19:25:00 We used to build quite a few super yachts years ago.

But with our high wages and the high dollar and the global financial crisis I think it has dropped off quite a bit.

I'd hate to be a super yacht builder.
You have lots of guys working on a boat, then when it has finished what do you do if you have not got another contract?

1355005 2013-10-04 20:53:00 Yeah I'm personally not convinced that taking government funding for something like this is a good idea...

I mean it's great and all to try and compete again, but thats a LOT of money... Think of that kind of money going into the UFB project, or the "Feed the hungry kids at school" project? Do you know how many kids you can feed for a few million dollars?

Not to mention if we win, the "clever people" in Council will no doubt say "Well we've gotta rebuild the waterfront again because it won't suffice any longer" and you can kiss goodbye another large sum of money on top of it. Auckland specifically accounts for over 2/3 of the countries debt? Yet we're only 1/3 the population... And things like this are basically why.

1355006 2013-10-04 21:14:00 The amount of money the govt has and is going to spend on the AC is chicken feed.

This is going to open a can of worms with what I'm going to post - I don't give a sh1t.

Have a look at the chart halfway down THIS PAGE (en.wikipedia.org) count the amounts, makes 36 mill not even worth mentioning.

Now the question -- The amount of money spent on linked page -- how much has been of a real benefit to the average NZer ? The moneyhas to come from somewhere, and where do you think that may be ? You'd have to be a complete idiot not to know.
