Australians-want-catamarans-but-claw-back-costs (www.stuff.co.nz) On the less serious side, at least with Catamarans they have two hulls to break in half before they sink ;) ( thankfully no one got hurt or killed). |

But the Americas cup DID generate millions in GST from building all of those AC45's and 2 or 3 of the AC 72's And it does help our boat building industry and our technology companies. And the America's Cup Did result in a far better Auckland water front. As for education and hospitals we spend BILLIONS on those every year. This is only about 10 million a year. |

| 1354890 | 2013-10-02 20:29:00 | I got wrapped up in the races for a while at the end there when it looked like we might win, but I don't think spending tax money on sailing is a great use of the funds myself. As it stands IMHO the americas cup has not really been countries competing but rather corporations assembling the best team they can get from wherever, building the best boat they decide to afford, and nominally representing a country. Should be called the corporate cup. I'm a bit against any "sport" where technology and budget can effect the outcome. If you wan't to call it sport level the playing field, recruit talent from your own country, and make them race in evenly matched standardised boats. Not that there's anything wrong with the cup as it stands, just stop pretending it's anything but an exercise in corporate advertising/ competition. |

If the Public dont/wont all donate $10 directly out of their own pocket then we dont deserve to have a NZ campaign , that most of us followed with great interest (not me though) And yes, the Govt waste so many $$ , this is just a drop in the bucket. There is a small return, via taxes, even if we dont host it here. Small $ return yes, but at least its something , other govt wasted $ returns nothing. |
