2014-04-23 22:10:00 | Got my new Asus laptop with Win8 - upgraded to 8.1. Created the system image and wanted to create a bootable DVD but there's no option to do so. Open up Recovery - Create recovery drive, only USB flash drive option is available. Where is it hidden?

2014-04-23 22:34:00 | creating a recovery DVD is gone in Win8.x. It's USB only. If you have the install media you can use that to recover your desktop: www.techrepublic.com

2014-04-23 23:07:00 | Thanks, autechre. I'm trying to create a system image using Active@ but I just couldn't get the new laptop to boot from the Active@ boot disk! Pressed Esp key only brings up the menu which has only two options, 'Boot manager...' and enter setup. went in to BIOS set up but still couldn't figure out how to get it to boot from optical drive! Laptop model: Asus N Series R750J It seems Windows 8 is making life more 'complicated' for end users! Took me more than an hour to 'set' it up as wainuitech always suggests.

2014-04-24 03:11:00 | curious to know why you'd want to boot off optical drive instead of USB key | nmercer (3899) | |
2014-04-24 04:07:00 | Simply, if I have the install DVD and there's a optical drive built-in, why can't I boot from it? A DVD media costs <$1.00 and a USB flash drive costs >$5.00. That's what the optical drive for!

2014-04-24 06:21:00 | If you want to download the W8.1 90 Day trial, that is a full working OS, as well as the options to repair. Its roughly 3.6GB. technet.microsoft.com Being a Enterprise trial, if its installed, after the time is up it basically stops working and needs to be replaced. BUT as a repair DVD it will work with no time limits. Don't know whose bright Idea in MS it was to exclude the Option for CD repair options, as they seem to think people no longer use CD/DVD's --- news Flash - People do. As for booting from media the UEFI Options may need to be altered to legacy options in the BIOS to allow booting from a CD or even a USB drive.

2014-04-24 09:50:00 | Thanks, wainuitech for alerting me that UEFI options. I disabled 'Secure Boot' and then 'enable CSM' in the BIOS, and now I'm able to select to boot from optical drive. BTW, what are the advantages/disadvantages of 'UEFI' and 'Secure Boot'? I'm creating the system image with Active@ now. Cheers

2014-04-24 10:27:00 | it is in a nut shell a security feature. A basic Article which explains it is HERE (www.howtogeek.com) if you wanted to go more indepth have a read of UEFI_Secure_Boot_in_Modern_Computer_Security_Solut ions_2013.pdf (www.uefi.org ions_2013.pdf) Its a PDF and goes into quite a bit of detail. This is why bootable media like CD's wont work with UEFI enabled, its basically saying sorry sunshine you're not allowed ;)
