284258 2004-10-24 23:05:00 Running XPSP2, firewall, AVG, spybot & adaware.
CPU AMD Athlon XP 1800, 60GB 5400 rpm Hard drive 3/4 empty. 510 MB RAM.
The Monitor is a 17" flat screen CRT,
About 5 minutes the screen goes blank with just a bright line across the middle. Have replaced the the Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400 card with a new Chaintech G force MX 4000 and have downloaded new drivers from Nvidia.
The problem remains the same, if I wasn't already grey I would be by now.
Any ideas Please.

284259 2004-10-24 23:19:00 It would be worth testing it with a different Monitor. Can you borrow one from a friend. It will be a case of try different things to locate the problem. Davesdad (923)
284260 2004-10-24 23:24:00 Sounds more like a monitor fault to me Ashka.

To get a diagnosis, start up from cold and as soon as the display is established, switch the monitor off. Wait 10 minutes then turn it on again, and if it shows the screen as normal but runs 5 minutes then collapses to a line you can be pretty sure it is the monitor suffering a frame collapse. To make absolutely sure, leave the computer running still, but turn the monitor off again and leave it half an hour or so to cool down. Then switch it on again and if the five minute delay until the bright line occurs again that is pretty conclusive.

Of course if you have access to another monitor you can try that and see if the fault is still present. I assume you have checked the power leads etc to ensure they are in place properly, but a loose, damaged or faulty monitor lead plug is very unlikely to cause this problem.

Hopefully the monitor is under warranty as repairs are unlikely to be economic.

284261 2004-10-24 23:37:00 Thanks Guys,
Tried all the tests you suggested Billy T, Still collapses after about 5 minutes.
No warranty after 3 years so no XP until I come up on Lotto for a new monitor. Pity about the new card that I didn't need.
Not a good day.

284262 2004-10-24 23:39:00 Why don't you see if you can swap the new card for a second hand 17" monitor? metla (154)
284263 2004-10-25 00:00:00 is it not a driver clash?? have you uninstalled all of the software/drivers from the old graphics card? my problem was sort of like this, my intergrated graphic drivers clashed with my radeon 9600se ( i think that was the problem) so i formated and it goes now. it used to run for like 15 min and then the monitor would turn off and i had to reset, so i got a tad sick of it and reformated. :D

284264 2004-10-25 01:05:00 It is nothing to do with video cards or drivers Prescott, the vertical scan on the monitor collapses. That is an internal fault in the monitor, not the monitor turning itself off.

Seeing as the GF2 and GF4 can both use the same drivers its highly unlikely.
