pentium 150 mhz
Ram 196 meg

Debian (woody) refused to install using boot cd or install floppies
Same result with Red Hat 9

But Red Hat 7 not only booted from cd but also installed It even detected the ISA Modem which was thought to be no longer part of this world and the Realtec NIC (video etc all fine)

My question is this machine not up to spec for the other two linux dsitros my research seems to indicate it should have been ok.

284169 2004-10-24 13:06:00 Hi Beama,

The only thing you haven't mentioned is hard drive size. :)

Apart from that, the rest of your specs do seem to suggest that both Woody and Redhat 9 should install. The main problem I had installing Redhat 9 on a similar spec machine with 64MB RAM was trimming down the package selection enough so it would fit on a 1.2GB hard drive. ;)

Perhaps it could be due to your install media or your CD-rom drive?

284170 2004-10-24 20:09:00 sorry

10 gig hard drive

I tried trimming the install

I have woody installed on duel boot lappy and I am about to compile a custom kernel for it (that should be fun)

the pc was freebie as the person whated to dispose of it and couldn't be bothered speanding money on it the os was corrupted etc and he lost the os disks( Im suspect on that one) oh well it has Red Hat 7 on it now and running well.

284171 2004-10-24 20:11:00 Sounds like the drivers were removed from the kernel....

I'd be inclined to give Vector Linux a shot on it :-)

284172 2004-10-24 20:53:00 Is this an Intel chip or a Cryix although that shouldn't make any difference. Dolby Digital (160)
284173 2004-10-24 20:55:00 not sure

The ISA modems were real modems unlike most PCI which are Win modems.

284175 2004-10-24 22:05:00 Right you are, however they pruned out a few drivers around 2.4.19 IIRC for ISA modems. Chilling_Silence (9)
284176 2004-10-24 23:01:00 Yeah, the good old Lucent ISA modems were still Win modems plus a few others.
