2004-10-26 04:01:00 | Please - please for the love of God don't remind me! I've only got Maths, English, Science, French and Japanese (unfortunately I do I . T . so that don't have an exam) . At WelTec I've got a Level 6 Switiching and Routing exam at the same time though, and a project to boot . As far as I'm concerned, if you fret about how close exams are you'll be a wreck by the time they come . All you have to do is remind yourself that even though they are important, there are many more ways in life to succeed than pass and do well in these exams . Passing is fabulous, and you should strive for it, and don't get me wrong, it's not OK to fail, but it's not the end of the world either . In the end of the day, you're not going to get into many more Unis outside the country with NCEA (with IGCSE yes you will, pity many schools like mine don't offer it, nor do any schools nearby) . In the end of the day you must remind yourself that panicking won't help at all if you're nevous to your gut and to the point that you throw up . You must rememnder that employers look at qualifications with not as much importance as your personality and unwritten skills . And as has been mentioned, you can get into a Uni pretty easily without said achievements . Now I think I'll take a minute to discuss why I hate NCEA-- 1) How harder things are worth less credits than easier ones . Though this makes it easy to pass, it cripples those who spend their whole life studying (and i must emphasise this, your grades simply depend on how much you study and not so much your intelligence) and make a silly mistake (like being distracted by a fire engine during a language listening comprehension) . Grade point averages just make me sick for this reason . 2) How they pretend that the wording of each question has underlying meanings, for example: Describe means state one point, Explain means state two points, and Discuss means three points (For achievement, merit and excellence respectively) - and then they don't follow them at all . 3) How I can't read questions . Numerous times have I been stumped because I failed to read the question correctly - the theory was correct but I simply did not grasp the meaning in the pressure of the moment (yet another reason to drink fluids, go to bed early and stay calm) . Things like "and solve it", "determine which she should buy from", "two squares but one's two metres longer", "when" (not what), "when" (not why) . . . why can't they just give us straight forward problems? And don't tell me they're trying to be realistic! 4) How if you get everything but one achievement question right, you fail . 5) How everything changes across departments . 6) HOW IT COSTS $25 TO GET AN EXAM PAPER REASSESSED . (They'll delibirately mismark to get people to complain/) I must give a round of applause to my teachers, they try their best but the system is silly! </rant derived from personal issues> Finally, good luck . Seems a bit early to say so (I'm in denial), but I for one know that I need to be motivated to study . It'd be so much more fun if my school had let us go up years!

I'm in 4th form too, and I still have 7 months (GRRR) till I'm 15 and can drive (I CAN drive better than adults I know but NOO! the dumb law won't let me driveX-(), but my school has a class that does NCEA level one for Science and one for Maths (both of which I am in). So I have exams. But not many. :) George |

2004-10-26 05:15:00 | I do IGCSE at AGS. Got english tomorrow (really easy subject) and then i got business on friday. I have 11 exam papers in total. My exams start tomorrow and the last one's on the 11th of November. But yeah, not bothered at all, cause IGCSE is pretty damn easy. Plus all I need is a D grade in Maths for uni entrance. And we also had internals just a month ago which was basically practice IGCSE exams (I think the business paper was actually a old IGCSE paper) and I did pretty well in those (averaged about an A/A- grade). I reckon if more schools gave their students mock exams like these it'll help them do well in the real thing (especially since AGS tends to make the internals wayy harder than the real thing). | static (4108) | |

2004-10-26 05:37:00 | International General Certificate of/for (not sure which) Secondary Education. Lot harder than NCEA, more stuff covered, overall a better education system and also its accepted at unis all around the world (unlike NCEA). Oh and its by the Cambridge examination board.

2004-10-26 06:01:00 | It's International General Certificate of Secondary Education My school gave us mock exams as school exams last term. We have also gone through almost every exam paper from 2000 till present day. Static> You do the 0500 syllabus right? The English (First Language) one? You don't need to do any work/study for that! At our school exams, the 0500 guys were sitting there waving their papers and smiling at each other when us other Literature 0486 guys weren't even half way through. Mind you, we have to memorise 15 poems, Romeo and Juliet, Animal Farm, 6 'short'stories [that aren't even short at all]. I'd be interested to know what grades your school get, being "top" in the country. Can you remind me what you guys are getting when you first started? :p The joy of competition ....
