284297 2004-10-25 09:44:00 It says to use the greater of either 100MB or enough to bring PF + RAM to 500mb. I have 512MB of ram, so according to this article I should set the initial to 100MB?

Currently I have 448MB of RAM, 512 actually because the video takes 64.

I have 139MB 'available', and 211MB of 'system cache'. PF usage is 264MB.

Total kernel memory: 50MB
Paged kernel memory: 39MB
Unpaged kernel memory: 11MB

BTW what is Commit Charge? Currently it is 264M same as my page file, but it is not always.

Since I have free RAM, can you move more stuff into physical memory to increase performance?

I just want to make the most of my 512MB of RAM.

Cheers
George

284298 2004-10-25 09:44:00 There is a FAQ (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) on virtual memory - should it be re-written to bring it up to date? Or is it rather irrelevant now with Win XP handling it more efficiently?

I will add Terry's link to the FAQ anyway. :-)

284299 2004-10-25 09:45:00 remember this (www.osnn.net) terry ;-) ;-) ;-) tweak'e (174)
284300 2004-10-26 00:01:00 Er... I dont tweak'e, should I? But then my memory is not that good :8}

However that is also a good article.

I remember when I first installed XP, and before I had read how virtual memory operates with NT/XP, I tried to do the win98 thing of making the paging file small, and XP soon let me know that it didnt like it :)

284301 2004-10-26 00:12:00 Let's go back to Win98, to complete things a bit.

If you have enough ram ( say 256MB or preferably more) then add the following entry under the [386Enh] heading in system.ini:

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

If you want to have 512MB or more ram then add this entry under [Vcache]:

MaxFileCache=524288

The first entry forces Win98 to use ram before swap file.

The second entry allows use of more than 512MB ram.

The result is a very small or zero swap file, and a faster system.

This is all well documented as a Google search will soon reveal.
