284880 2004-10-26 08:30:00 Hi friends,
Probably did somethuing stupid. have XP Professional and three partitions on my disk. Have SP2 running for 2 months, no probs.
Today I wanted to reinstall my program <Firegraphic>. it started to install then I saw that it was on the wrong partition and I interrupted by ctr-alt-del. Now I have aproblem. All icons on the screen went to the Win-default icon and nothing is recognised upon clicking on it. It wants to know the starting program for all icons. My command center is almost intact en I can browse all files, just start none of them.
I tried the repair console, not working. I tried just now to reinstall Win XP again, but it stalls saying: Windows can not open this file: rundll32.exe. Browse on the web to find it or chosse from a list......
same thing 30 seconds later for regsvr32.exe.........
What can I do to make Windows know what these file should be associated with?
please help, all the information is still there...... What can I do

cheers

284881 2004-10-26 08:34:00 How did u try and reinstall ? from within XP or a clean install? It doesnt sound like u tried a clean install.

If reinstalling when theres a major prob, its better to do a clean install, than trying to reinstall XP over itself.

284882 2004-10-26 08:41:00 Hi, thanks for answering.
i put in the WIN XP disk and completely reinstalled. I had to key in the license code again, buyt it all stalled with the rundll32.exe and regsvr32.exe demands. Somehow Windows does not know what progrma gocverns the exe files and I do not know it either.
If I could break through this I may be able to do a system restore?

284883 2004-10-26 08:46:00 Yup OK. BUT did you change the bootdisk in the BIOS to CD, and boot from the CD?? (clean install)? Then let XP install??

NOT by just putting the CD in while XP is running? Or while youre in XP / using XP?

284886 2004-10-26 08:57:00 Really has to be run while windows is up, even in safe mode. It will put in the default windows associations into the registry. Without windows active, the registry is not available.

If you can get into windows, then yes, you can run from floppy.

284888 2004-10-26 09:13:00 No kiss, my wife has a mean right cross. :)

Have had that problem caused by a virus in a clients PC. I really hate to reload Windows if I can get away with it. Hence when I found that litttle batch file, I kept it very safe.

Have fun, and wipe the sweat from the brow now. :D
