Yeah there are specific IGP boards, off the top of my head a couple models were the Abit NF7-M and i know soltek had a board with the onboard IGP.

I think it was a MX440, i know it was a member of the GF4 MX series anyway. Not the most awsome video card every but considerable better than anything VIA or Intel offers. Only ATi offer a chipset with better intergrated graphics.

285016 2004-10-27 01:28:00 Depends if you mean nothing matters apart from the budget,or if you want a snappy comp at a good price.

Im biased so i only think in AMD,

Either way the budget chip is the sempron, pick which ever fits your budget,do the same with the amount of ram,Pick either a board with intergrated video such as the Asus A7V400-MX or grab an nforce2 and a video card, whack it into whatever case takes your fancy and your pretty much done.

S-ata is a non-issue,if the board suports it then why not, seeing as it doesnt give any steller advantage i wouldn't let sata dictate which mobo to buy.

LCD's have dropped in price,so if you talk to the right people should be able to get one even on a budget system.

Not many specifics im afraid.

285017 2004-10-27 01:30:00 Don't even bother looking for a nforce2 board with intergrated video chipset, few and far between nowadays,Haven't seen one on a pricelist in over 6 months. metla (154)

Yes, I agree . Even if you buy a complete system second hand, you will still need to check the monitor specifically, even though they should have a better chance of not being faulty .

Personally I would not buy any form of computer by it self . They are cheap enough these days .

17" CRT range from approx . 172incl gst
15" LCD range from approx . 336incl gst
17" LCD range from approx . 415incl gst

285019 2004-10-27 01:55:00 It should be noted to the unknowing, that LCD screens generally advertise the "viewable area".

CRT Generally advertise "Screen size" IE 17" CRT, 15 1/2" "viewable".

EG a 17" LCD, generally has the same/almost same, viewable size as a 19" CRT.

Unless you are into highend graphics LCD is the way, less: power, space, heat,

285020 2004-10-27 02:00:00 Most definitly, case in point all the packages i sell are being reconfigured with LCD screens,a crt will have to be requet only.

I proclaim the crt DEAD.

285021 2004-10-27 02:18:00 Thanks folks for some interesting but widely varied responses. It could be that "LCD's have dropped in price,so if you talk to the right people should be able to get one even on a budget system." but Pricespy suggests that CRTs are still a lot cheaper for the same viewable area. Perhaps I don't know the "right people".
Anandtech seemed to like the Sempron, but I guess my Duron 1000 on my DFI board with intergrated video will have to go for a while yet. ( But Christmas approaches ........)

To be honest, I don't think you would need a system unless you don't have 256mb ram or running out of hard drive.

But I am still running a P3 700, with 128mb and 6.4 harddrive... 16mb video and a big fat 17" monitor on my this machine (I have LCD on family PC :() And running Windows XP Pro, ... I don't know how I've managed to get through the last two years. Poor PC is having to process digital photos and things alot lately.... Only looking for a new PC because this one has some minor problems and memory, hdd, etc. not enough. So....

Bring on Christmas... doubt it'll make any difference though... Our chimney is so dirty, Santa would never climb down.. unless he's t...h...a...t.... dumb!

For the specalist graohics users cad Ect big crt has a place, for a while.

In the soho the crt is for all intents and puropses, so.

Now how long before there is an increase in display quality, and a drop in price, in projectors?

285024 2004-10-27 04:24:00 go for the 512mb of ram if you can, i have upgraded 2 computers here at home lately from 128/256 to 512/640 mb of ram and the improvement has been stellar , i built my computer with 1024mb of ram and am running it with 1536mb at the moment, and even that upgrade lifted in windows snappyness

with 3 internet windows, 2 my computer windows and windows media player im using 430mb of ram (plus there are various other things running in the background)
