284953 2004-10-26 19:48:00 Can anyone help.I need to find a Linux formatted drive and reformat it and it appears I may not get my PM discs to load on boot Dumb1 (5351)
284954 2004-10-26 20:53:00 Can you describe what sort of boot floppy you are trying?

Is it something made from Partition Magic?

My PM is quite old now, version 3 +ver 4 upgrade, so I cant be much help as regards the later 'virtual' boot floppies or whatever they were called, but I remember it made PM recovery disks and there was also a dos pqmagict.exe dos text based utiliity which is very very useful. It allows partitions to be made, removed, it will remove obstinate Linux partitions that Fdisk wont handle.

Being dos based partition sizes are limited though.

If the boot floppy has been made from PM, can you re-create a new one from PM?

284955 2004-10-26 21:02:00 The floppy works ok in at least 2 other machines both with XP and 1 with linux Dumb1 (5351)
284956 2004-10-26 21:22:00 Is there some way without PM that we can "see" the linux formatted HD and reformatt it.
Instructions need to be reasonably simple as I am assisting a IH friend by email to get this HD in to service.
Could the problem with the floppies be that there is some sort of protection
on the floppies to prevent pirating ?

284957 2004-10-26 21:30:00 it dont matter if the hdD shows in windoze or not PM will see it.........for example I have xp and 98 on a drive .....when I boot with 98 it cant see the xp drive and it dont show up in the 'my computer' etc ......however PM when run from within 98 sees the ntfs drive fine as........it'll also see linux partitions/drives drcspy (146)
284958 2004-10-26 21:31:00 heres another idea...........make boot images of the floppies onto cd as 'boot cd's' ........nero will do this nicely for you then it wont matter if the floppy drive works or not.........you can boot using the cds.. drcspy (146)
284959 2004-10-26 21:51:00 I am now pretty certain there is protection on the floppies would the image idea get round this? Dumb1 (5351)
284960 2004-10-26 22:24:00 Is there any easy way to check or see a linux HD from XP or using RUN ?
If we are sure the drive is OK and in Linux format then we can go from there
ok

284961 2004-10-26 23:28:00 huh ?............it woudlnt matter whatsoever if the writeprotect tab was on or off on the floppy the drive will still read it.......... drcspy (146)
284962 2004-10-26 23:59:00 I still dont understand what floppy or floppies you are talking about.

If you have a Partition Magic CD, then it should be possible to copy pqmagict.exe from it, and then put that program onto a Win98 boot disk.

Then you can boot from that floppy and then run the dos text version of PM.
