The perferred option would be to use an access point ($100 - $150)
Plug the XH7916 into the phone socket, then the XH7916 into the access point, then the access point into the computer, all using ethernet cable (assuming the PC has a lan port).
You can then use a wireless PCIMIA card on the laptop to connect to the access point. With this option the PC should not need to be on for you to access the internet. All this should keep you from blinking.

The only problems you may have is getting everything to talk to eack other, as long as you can change the ip address on the access point you will have no worries.

The cheepest wireless option would meen you need a wireless card for both Laptop and PC, also the PC would need to be on for the Laptop to have access to the internet.

But the cheepest of all would be to run a second ethernet cable from the XH7916, if the laptop is used only in one room you could leave a coil of the cable so you could move around the room.

I thought AP's only had one ethernet input and didnt have an ethernet ouput, thus you would need to connect the router to a switch, connect the AP to the switch, and the desktop to the switch?

Still very early in the morning, for me. (I knew I should have done a darn sketch first)
