285156 2004-10-27 22:24:00 Someone I know wants to draw fairly simple objects - basically rectangular blocks with bits shaved off the corners and maybe a couple of cables going into it. Needs to record dimensions, do it in some sort of perspective, and attach some basic notes.
I was thinking some program that allows you to draw sets of lines, snap them to a basic grid, keeps them as objects, can group lines to make shapes (ideally create new predefined shapes, somehow, but that can be done with a template) and move them forward and back, colour them if need be.
Less complex than drawing houses, not really any nasty curves, mostly straight lines.
Visio would do it, but not perfect. Need something simple to learn, easy to use, that can handle it. Full-blown CAD would be overkill. Doesn't have to be freeware.
Any suggestions?

While you think a full blown Cad would be over kill, with some of what they want Cad seems the only sensible sugestion. eg. keeps them as objects

285159 2004-10-27 23:30:00 I found this site that may be of help, it is freeware, some of the programs are crippled, others are said to be fully operational.

285161 2004-10-28 00:29:00 Well, you could try DraftChoice for Windows, it is a rather easy to use shareware program from TRIUS (www.triusinc.com) that will handle your requirements, and quite a few more without a months study to get the first box drawn.

285163 2004-10-28 02:13:00 Whats the problem with Visio?
Should be easy to learn the basics, as it is just drag and drop.

285164 2004-10-28 03:30:00 Visio is great with flowcharts, but this is a bit different. Not sure it can handle drawings with more complex shapes.
I am going to run it past the guy, see what he thinks. It does have the grouping, layers, and things that he needs.
