285677 2004-10-28 19:31:00 Thinking of new cooling solutions for my rig - Is it worth the money you pay for it , good things , bad things. System gets pretty hot ( 60 Deg - vid , 50 Deg CPU , 30 Deg Case ) , And i have the room to put it in. ApeNz (4220)
285678 2004-10-28 19:43:00 It depends, do you go to LAN regularly? Watercooling can limit your portability. Watercooling has 2 benefits over aircooling a)its quite b)its more effecient thus cools better.

If your PC is overly noisey and this bothers you then watercooling can be a good way to reduce noise. But in saying that if you have a well designed case and invest in the right aircooling hardware its not difficult to make aircooling as quite as watercooling.

Watercooling is more effecient and will allow you to get a lil more extra out of an overclock. Depending on the arcitecture its often not more than a few 100MHz's. You will get better temps, but once again a well designed aircooling setup can also produce good temps (not as good as water but still good).

When i say a well designed air cooling system i dont mean thermaltake, and i dont mean a cheap $80 case. Buying a quality copper cooler made by Thermalright or Zalman is a good idea, a well constructed cases with mounting holes for 120mm fans is also a good idea. 120mm fans can then be volt modded to run at a lower speed, thus reducing noise, but still pushing more air than a cheap 80mm. Buying quality fans is also a good idea as the more expensive brand have less mechanical noise. Ducting mods also add to the effeciency of a case allowing the HSF to draw cool air from directly outside the case.

A few months back i was considering watercooling, but then a friend said to me "how could you sleep at night knowing that if you get one lil leak its night night expensive PC hardware". Granted most modern watercooling hardware is well designed and isnt likely to leak, I couldnt take the risk.

285679 2004-10-28 21:20:00 Just be careful.

if you are going to purchase a water cooling system, you want to spend a decent amount. Cheap water coolers break easy, i had a friend who had the 3R System brand water cooling, and the resevoir cracked and broke after a week.

or it was the dry ice we put in the resevoir :D. got the over clocked AMD 2400 down to 1.C :D.

285680 2004-10-29 00:26:00 CoolWave Stormcool III WaterCooling Kit - is it any good , $199 from overclockers nz ApeNz (4220)
285681 2004-10-29 00:30:00 A decent HSF would probably outperform the Coolwave kit, if you want decent cooling from water its best to build your own. The OCNZ range with 3/8 barbs is good value, money can also be saved by not using a res and using an old car radiator.

Its currently listed on the OCNZ website $245, for that sort of money you could get a really good HSF, a Zalman passive NB HS, and possibly even a HSF for your video card.

is this the vid card the radeon 9200 that you posted awhile ago, as i said 60° is insane for a underpowered 9200, check your temps, they are most likely to be wrong . . . . . .

285683 2004-10-29 04:54:00 this is not for the 9200 - im not going to spend money cooling that one , this is for a 9600 XT ApeNz (4220)
285684 2004-10-29 05:03:00 oh ok, but still 60°C is quite hot dont you think, but by how much will the cooling system cool it down? Prescott (11)
285685 2004-10-29 05:06:00 Would it be possible to box in a large aluminium heat sink and have a thermo syphon system?
If the boxing was good quality welding there shoud not be any leaks.
The heat sink woud clip on in the normal way.
Do you think it would work?

285686 2004-10-29 09:27:00 i want or are considering water cooling because it is quiet and have reason to believe that it cools your system well - and impresses the crowd ApeNz (4220)
