285417 2004-10-28 05:15:00 Sorry to reintroduce this topic under another heading, but I wonder if someone out there knows what might be happening. As I said earlier, each time I shut down or restart my PC, I lose my Internet connection. Nothing except a system restore seems to resolve the problem. Grateful for any help. Thanks. k8smum (6062)
285418 2004-10-28 05:26:00 I think it may be time to call in a reputable repairman k8smum your problems don't seem to be getting any better.
This is the 3rd thread you've started on the same subject & your problem is still unresolved.
I'm not trying to be clever or sarcastic but sometimes one just has to bite the bullet & seek professional help.
I'd take it to a professional & get an opinion & a quote

285419 2004-10-28 05:43:00 I've been leaning toward that line of thinking too. I might be able to get one of the Old Boy's IT colleagues to have a look next time they're passing. Meantime, is there any danger in continuing to do system restores? k8smum (6062)
285420 2004-10-28 06:12:00 I havent really followed the other threads but I want to relay a problem I had with my internet connection.

I am on adsl. I use a alcatel 4 port router (only comp connected). Occassionally normally after several hours idle I would not be able to view any web pages. I would still have a connection to the net but always get 'page cannot be displayed'. To fix I would have to reboot and all good again.

While trolling for ideas to fix I thought about the DNS settings. By simply entering xtra's (my isp) dns settings (as opposed to automatically) fixed my problem.

Have you tried this?

285422 2004-10-28 08:17:00 yea, ive suggested this in another resort, as a last resort of course, back up your important data then do a reformat, if it still doesnt go get a pro to fix it... Prescott (11)
285423 2004-10-28 09:00:00 sam m,

I have been having the exact same problem as you had as of late. I am going to try entering the DNS settings as per your suggestion. If if works it'll be bloody great!!!!! Thanks ;-)

Out of curiosity, is this a new prob for you? I had been on adsl for a while without this prob but prior to fixing it I would have put up with it for about 6 months before stumbling across this solution.

Yes this is a new problem. I have had adsl for approx 2 1/2 years and had no probs. I was putting it down to the install of SP2 as it begun just after that.

285426 2004-10-28 10:16:00 Try turning OFF system restore . Maybe each time you reboot system restore is kindly restoring to a point where your stuff isn't configured properly . I've seen stranger things .

System restore has always been a hunk o' junk (IMHO) . It's especially nice how it acts like a repository for virus' . Just when you think you've cleaned em . . .

Tim .
