| 285851 | 2004-10-29 04:28:00 | drb1: There's precious little point pissing around wtih the likes of Grub etc when you can get a nice Win32-only friendly boot-loader such as XOSL ;-) Personally I wouldnt use anything _but_ GrUB, but oh well...... |

If you use a loader like "Boot Magic" by Power Quest it will handle all the systems. Only one primary partition is allowed to be active at a time & the others are hidden. Boot Magic activates the chosen partition. So far as the computer is concerned, there is only one primary "C" partition. With Boot Magic you can set the default OS & the time delay to boot. |

MZee, 1 O/Ss to get infected, damaged, play around with, and generally abuse, on top of 1 or more with various software configurations . Profiles lets you manage H/W configureations, not S/w . Chill, You are as usuall, correct . D . |

| 285854 | 2004-10-29 09:52:00 | Should have made it a bit clearer, I meen the computer name that it asks you for when you install, the same name the computer goes by on a network, right click My Computer > properties > Computer name tab. I was still refering to two XP installs on the same phisical disk. I run two XP and one linux instalation on my computer but each is on it's own HD, one I use for kazaa, winMX, games and to trial programs before I put them on my main HD. My test install I have stripped everything that I dont use in windows off, turned all the visual goodies off, it looks like a 9x/2000 OS and runs like a friggen rocket ship. One day I will stumble accross the artical I read, but if the said computer is running two XP's on one HD with no problems it dosent really matter what I read off the MS website. (but I was sure thats what it said....oh well) |

| 285855 | 2004-10-29 10:16:00 | Robb, Small fine point, if you try to put 2 X XP pro, or 2x xp home, on 1 disk it will spit. Unless you tweak or use different boot loader. Win bootloader sees xp home and xp pro as different O/S, and if you look into this there are differences, look at ics, and other networking features for starters. The bootloader reads a name, as "Godfather" said change the name of the installed O/S in the bootloader, and install same O/S in another partition no problem. Over 3 O/S in 1 M/s bootloader is also supposed to give trouble, IDNKITIS. M/s make Multi boot sound very difficult, when really it isnt. Like so much of their Documentation, I sometimes wonder if is written with the intent of making it difficult, and making users think they need M/S Tech support. D. |

You can have 5 copies of Windows XP Pro installed on one partition if you want. Just install them in directories like: Win1 Win2 Win3 etc The boot loader will use the apporiate directory. |
