Also some of the worst DNS servers on the planet.... terrible for caching old old old records.

So what ones would you recommend?

285440 2004-10-30 10:42:00 Pretty much any ones other than those.

Paradise, Clear, Orcon, Slingshot, Actrix, pretty much anyones name servers except Xtra's.

Incidentally Xtra also run a second set of internal DNS servers exclusively for mail handling, these cache stale records even longer than their external ones do - took a lot of work to find that out.

285441 2004-10-30 10:46:00 Yeah, I've noticed that.

We often have a massive problem with our site that only XTRA customers are affected by. This will go on for several days, and a simple ping from an affected customer shows that the IP address given by the server is way out of date, and pointing to an old server of ours or something. All this while everyone else in NZ gets it fine. I've emailed XTRA several times about the issue with no replies ever.

Not sure if you are hosting your site on a dynamic IP address, if you are then it's partially self inflicted - nothing business critical should be run off an ADSL connection, particularly a dynamic one.

Xtra are known for caching DNS records well after their TTL, bad for their public servers, and worse still for their internals.

I've spoken with Xtra's NOC about it on several occasions, they seem happy to leave it at the status quo. It hurts their customers after all and they couldn't go fixing something like that - their name servers are pants.
