The economic imperative of buying a New : cheap, supported, warrantied, server, to run for 4 years. Then dump at scrap value.

Yeah,i should have mentioned excluding servers . Dell do well in that area and i have read that clients of theirs have been calling for AMD powered servers .

285646 2004-10-28 10:49:00 . . . so Dell Servers Rock???

We're using an oldish [ like 2-3 yr old] IBM P3 server with NT4 , and are told by the folks who provide our software that this setup won't do inside 12/12 , as M$ won't be supporting NT/ Win 98se . . .
. . . . yada yada yada

I'd rather buy a server with full back-up than build one myself and be held responsible when/if it falls over - tape backup etc applies . . .

So , are the Dell servers worth considering ??? :|

285647 2004-10-28 11:08:00 Opterons in blade servers rock, apparently, with Linux of course . Unfortunately Dell wont build with AMD because they have Intel wrapped around their little finger (price wise & service) for the fact that they buy way more Intel chips than anyone else .

There are plenty more that do put that combo together though .

Thyre a bench mark package . If you dont keep them too long thyer reliable .

Supplied with linux, supported, big BIG plus .

Most of them can be upgrade to life extend, but you need to look at your 100% availability before you go there .

4-5years, out . Work out the numbers, and the cost recovery at sale, also tying in with drive warrantys at that point .

Some of the lease deals are very attractive . Especially for a high loss, larger upfront, item .

I have a 2200 P2 twin, upgraded from 266 to 333, still reliable as, but noisy . good for play but out of "trust" for 100% availability, apart from the CPU its all factory .

2300 went black .

Even if you use their deal to make M/S give you the O/S and licences, if you have that much P/P
