285858 2004-10-28 23:35:00 I don't need help, I need an explanation.
When I tried to turn my computer on it booted to a screen that told me to click on my name to enter. BUT my name wasn't on the page. Nothing to click on at all.
So I tried booting from the XP cd. After the preliminaries it informed me I didn't have a hard drive.
So I entered bios setup and no hard drive !!!. Then I found that "Sata enabled" had disenabled itself. I reset it. Then rebooted and managed to bypass the "Click on name" nonsense.
Then I discovered that Tweakui had removed the tick from "show name".
I put that back in and I am back in business.
How could this happen? It was all OK when I turned off.
NAV says I do not have a virus. AdAware and Spybot can't find anything. And Windows XP firewell is set . So how did it happen?
And now to realy make my day I dropped my favourite coffee mug on to a new crystal ashtray and broke both of them. So when my wife gets home there'll be more trouble.

CYaBro,

Ta, it was a fair pointer to think on, I thought.

285864 2004-10-29 01:21:00 Well Jack, we are going out into left field here, but it could be caused by mains-coupled interference, or external interference from a digital cellphone used at an "up-close and friendly" distance from the PC.

Of the two I would think the former to be most likely, and it would take the form of noise carried between neutral & earth as this is unfiltered, whereas normal power noise gets filtered by the power supply.

Transient spikes on the earth and of sufficient amplitude to interfere with digital circuits are relatively rare but they do happen. Best test is to see if it ever happends again. If it doesn't then transient noise was probably the cause.

If it does happen again look for a cause inside your computer.

Cheers

285865 2004-10-29 01:31:00 Thanks BillyT. Nice to get a helpful answer. I do have a good quality surge supressor, but I suppose it doesn't mean much.
