285374 2004-10-28 03:10:00 Bit of an awkward one guys but what approximately would you expect to pay for a tech to fix a computer with corrupt boot.ini file, (unmountable_boot_volume), half a dozen viruses that Norton quarantined once it was run, :D over the top reinstall of XP to recover missing or corrupt files, registry sort out of redundant entries, defrag, addware / spyware removal and general tidy up.

I appreciate some techs charge their time out a $40hr and some at $90hr but I’m just looking for a ballpark figure, $50, $100, $200 more?

What do you think?

285375 2004-10-28 03:13:00 not sure exactly what the figure is, but why not fo it yourself? I'm sure myself and many other PF1 users would be hapy to help you in a "B.M.'s computer problems" thread. Plus, you would save a lot of money by doing it yourself - paid tech costs a lot Bletch (244)
285376 2004-10-28 03:15:00 I do lots of work like that for friends and friends of friends. I have never 'charged' anything, leaving it up to the individual concerned. Before I gave up drinking the standard payment was a bottle of Malt (of varying quality). The last time I did a job like the one you described I was given $100 and 3 tickets to the pictures. 285378 2004-10-28 03:42:00 Sorry guys should have made it clear.

It's not my computer but belongs to an acquaintance that took it to a shop for repair and thought the bill was a bit steep.

They asked me for an opinion and frankly I haven't a clue.

Like most people on here I prefer to fix my own so have no experience of charge out rates.

Just thought some of the techs that make a living doing these repairs may have a ballpark figure.

285379 2004-10-28 03:43:00 In shop, about $80 - $100 Pheonix (280)
285380 2004-10-28 03:45:00 Though I do like the idea of the Malt :D

After repair I think. Before could be entertaining, but dangerous.

About the same cost as a bottle of malt then? ;)

285382 2004-10-28 03:49:00 Depends on how much work was carried out on it,I would have charged $100,but that would have been a complete system overhaul.

Usually when someone asks to get a virus removed the system is littered with spyware and corrupt system files.

How much was the bill?

285383 2004-10-28 04:39:00 yep around $100 probably not less anyway depends on the pc really and how much hdd space has been used up, (how many files one needs to scan etc to check out viruses and spyware etc etc), and the speed of the pc will also affect that outcome too......altho sometimes one can just start a scan and leave it then run off to fix something else while it's going.......sorta 'double duty'.......(double dipping ? ). Anyway for friends my rates cheap...............bottle of whiskey per day - in advance - no work guaranteed !!! drcspy (146)
