286284 2004-10-30 08:44:00 Have a look at this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) thread and the link that is posted in it. Susan B (19)
286285 2004-10-30 10:32:00 If you are wishing to install the nVidia driver, you only need to install your kernel source (or headers) so that the video driver can be compiled against it. Compiling a kernel is a completely different matter and is not necessary to install a nVidia driver.

I think you may have your terminology confused. Your distro *should* include the kernel source that matches the kernel it was shipped with (you haven't updated your kernel since installing the distro?). You need to use whatever package manager it has to install that source from your installation CD's. There is no need to compile it. Then all you need to do is install the nVidia driver and then edit your XF86Config (or xorg.conf) to correctly reference this driver.

What distro are you running?

This reminds me, I'm supposed to be repolishing/updating a FAQ on nVidia drivers for Linux which I did start sometime ago now ... :8}

286286 2004-10-30 21:11:00 I dont think the kernel needs to know about your video card Its X server thats needs to know so you will need to adjust the KDE or Gnome settings. Oh and a kernel compile scary but fun I have just done three debian ones one I forgot to reconfigure lilo another I forgot to build in scsi support to the kernel (I know know "kernel panic missing drive" means) and the third seems to bo ok, also the different linux distro have different ways of achiving a kernel compile, so tell us your distro and release version, one last thing the command "lspci" (will list pci devices on your system) might be usefull if you what to go ahead with the kernel compile. beama (111)
