286297 2004-10-30 07:32:00 Perhaps he has a separate SATA bios?

My friend's P133 has a SCSI bios which is separate from the system BIOS.

286298 2004-10-30 07:58:00 lol, yer I dont know HOW your system is running since nothing gets detected .

(It might be coz something isnt set to AUTO in the BIOS, most probably) .

Or coz SATA is more "brighter" than IDE . It doesnt matter, whether you put it on AUTO or not . If there's a OS on it, and it's set to the bootdisk in the BIOS, it'll boot

And whether you've connected the SATA's to the SATA connections, on the mobo, or you're using an ide adapter to connect to the IDE connections on the mobo .

George, I wld say since the non-deluxe and deluxe are near identical (besides the deluxe, having RAID 0+1, and firewire I think)? Can't remember if it has this or not .

The non only has 0) . I cant see why the non would have the SATA settings in the BIOS and why the deluxe wouldnt . It SHOULD .

You shouldnt need drivers for SATA (only if u configure it as RAID) . BUT you HAVE to do this from a clean install, while installing XP .

You SHOULDN'T need drivers if it's 1 SATA or 2 in non-raid mode . Also, you shouldn't need drivers for CD's or DVD's (maybe for other OS's), BUT the BIOS should detect the connected devices, if:

The power to the device is connected, and if the ide data cable is also connected, (around the right way), and depending on which IDE connection the CD/DVD is on, the primary/secondary option in the BIOS is set to AUTO .

Or you could try putting ALL ide devices on AUTO in the BIOS . See what turns up, when u save the settings and the boot screen reappears lol .

Umm at the top of the sacreen while its booting, what version of the BIOS shows?? It should say something like 1018, 1017 etc . . . maybe it needs an update, if you havent flashed the BIOS lately, or at all .

286299 2004-10-30 08:06:00 BIOS Version is 10.14, and has never been updated, though I don't think that is my problem. I am beginning to think that there is something not plugged in correctly. Unfortunately, it is going to have to wait until tomorrow.

Thanks for your help so far Spacemannz. I'll have a poke around tomorrow and post back with my findings.

Cheers

286300 2004-10-30 08:08:00 One more thing - the reason I think there is a connection problem is that I had to configure RAID during the Win XP install. This was because, as described, the system could NOT see any drives and the only way to force it was by loading the SATA RAID drivers via F6 during XP installation. Miami Steve (2128)
286301 2004-10-30 08:12:00 Well here's the update site for the BIOS, if u DO decide to update it

Some BIOS updates DO fix such probs.

www.asus.com.tw

This is for the non and deluxe P4P800 (hopefully the link works! most probably wont)!

286302 2004-10-30 08:37:00 Strange! I checked out the IDE configuration options and got the following:

Onboard IDE Operate Mode [Enhanced Mode]
Enhanced Mode Support On [S-ATA]
Configure S-ATA as RAID [Yes]
Serial-ATA BOOTROM [Enabled]
IDE Detect Time Out(Sec) [35]

I see in my manual the Serial ATA BOOTROM is only enabled, when the SATA is configured as raid. And u say you're in RAID 0, that means the data from the main SATA is split to the 2nd (striping)?? And it doesnt support fault tolerance. So, if one dies the whole thing dies. If it's RAID 1, then the data on SATA 1 is identical to whats on SATA 2.

286303 2004-10-31 08:03:00 Yes, I am currently configured as RAID 0. I originally configured the PC with RAID 1 (mirroring) but decided I needed the space, so did a clean install with RAID 0 when SP2 was released. I'm not convinced that the speed difference is that substantial with the striping (at least with the applications I run) so I am thinking of just going back to non-RAID.

Obviously that will require a reformat. Spacemannz, did you use any drivers for your SATA drive during XP install? If so, which ones?

What about my data. If I create a Ghost image of my current system, then reformat as non-RAID, and restore the Ghost image, will I experience any problems? Does the configuration need to remain the same when using Ghost images? Or, should I just leave it alone and forget the SMART stuff.

286304 2004-10-31 21:27:00 Nope Steve . I didnt use drivers for just the 1 SATA . I did a clean install of XP . 1 SATA for the P4P800 SHOULDN'T need drivers . (Well I didnt need them here) .

You DO need the drivers if you have 2 SATA's (If you use RAID 0, or 1), or u enable RAID in the BIOS, I would say .

The drivers are on the P4P800 CD . They SHOULD be on the Deluxe CD as well . Get the P4P800 CD and look for the file makedisk . exe in one of the folders on the CD . According to the manual here makedisk . exe is in Drivers/chipset/IAA on the CD .

Thats the file u need . You have to run it and have a floppy handy . It extracts the drivers for SATA to a floppy . And this is the floppy u use (with a clean install), by pressing F6, so you can install the drivers .

Not too sure about the ghost image . Never used Ghost or image program before myself .

Well smart only tells u when something to going to fail .

It's not the end of the world, if you dont have the option lol . I wonder if its because u were in RAID 0?? Why nothing shows in the BIOS for either SATA? Shouldnt be tho .
Spacemannz (808)
286305 2004-10-31 21:39:00 Nope I have just found the P4P800 CD and makedisk is in

Drivers\VIARAID\DriverDisk. May or may not be in the same folder as the deluxe.

That was the one I used for my install . I couldn't find anything other than RAID drivers to get the XP install to see the drives .

Fairly extensive googling has suggested to me that I should probably be using the VIA RAID drivers rather than the IAA ones . However, for a non-RAID system, which is probably the way I would prefer to go at the moment, I still cannot get XP to see the drives . It has to be a connection problem, does it not?
