286201 2004-10-30 02:41:00 I just tried to play the LOTR on my PC, but when WMP opens it it just hangs for about a min and then opens "Playlist4" and won't play, No error messages just nothing.

If I try in PowerDVD it says "The file format is invalid" (after a min or so). Thats a min of "Not Responding", but still only 4% CPU usage.

In Explorer, using ANY dvd disk, data or video, opening it gives various "I/O Device" errors.

So is my DVD drive broken? Or is my DVD codec corrupt? It is a legal one that comes with PowerDVD.

The drive plays normal CDs perfectly by the way, but I believe they use a different set of components for DVD and CD? Because our DVD player can play DVDs but cannot read CDs (freezes when you try).

Perhaps the DVD laser is dirty? Please help,

Thanks, George

286202 2004-10-30 02:49:00 It's unlikely that the laser is "dirty", unless you smoke a lot near it. The laser isn't like a "needle" which plays records and can pick up crud. The laser shines a light through some lenses and mirrors. :D

But the drive might be dead. It does happen. :-(
