286673 2004-11-01 05:04:00 NVIDIA has began confirming the video acceleration functionality of the 6800 series GPU has a hardware flaw and will never work.

The VP offloads algorithm and image enhancement routines onto the GPU, allowing the CPU to focus on other work.

"The product timeframes for high-end products leave little for regressive error testing. This bug is unfortunate, but not a huge problem"
Unanimous NVIDIA distributor.

Although the problem doesn't effect gaming, features such as Motion Compensation, as used for smooth DVD playback, will be unavailable.

According to a spokesperson at NVIDIA UK the problem can not be rectified by new driver releases, however the PCI-E and other 6X00 chipsets do not have the bug.

So far there has been no official word from NVIDIA.

Users are furiated at shelling out top bucks for what they see as a flawed card. Many have been RMA'ing their units and threatening to turn to ATi hardware.

A worker of a large NVIDIA distributing company told the press the problem was small and unfortunate, but did not effect the performance of the card.

286674 2004-11-01 05:24:00 Shows the pure arrogance of those involved,No official word from Nvidia and those that do speak say its not an issue.

They should recall the product.

286675 2004-11-01 05:30:00 ive got one (6800gt) and while this doesnt bother me overly ( i dont really do much video encoding) i do feel quite let down at paying for a product i will never actually be able to use.

i fully agree with metla there should be a product recall and give us all shiny new 6800 ultras :p

286677 2004-11-01 09:48:00 Do you have a link for this?

The Inquirer and HardOCP are still showing claims from nVidia spokemen that all will be fixed in drivers. How many spokesmen do they have?

As many as they need, for each position they wish to maintain.

They get tactical instruction from M/S, for these little issues.
