286528 2004-10-31 22:17:00 While removing the battery from my GA 8IPE 1000 FE mothetboard I managed to break off the plastic flange on the battery holder.
The battery now,of course, will not sit in its slot.
At the moment it is being held in place by selotape. The tape is stuck to the motherboard and covers several of the metal bits, or whatever they are, that come out of the m/b.
Is this safe? Or will it do more damage? Is there anyway to replace the battery holder?
Or am I up for a replacement m/b?
I know I'm clumsy and stupid and whatever else you may think so there's no need to tell me.

286529 2004-10-31 22:27:00 The sellotape is unlikely to damage the motherboard within the useful life of the motherboard.

The holders are available, however you need good unsoldering / resoldering skills. Without these skills and suitable equipment these really is a danger to the motherboard from inappropriate soldering on a multi-layer PC board.

Consider getting another holder and using it external to the existing one? Use the existing one simply as a solder attachment point for wiring?

You could use a 2 x AA battery holder with lithium (or even just alkaline) cells, mounted anywhere in the case.

286530 2004-10-31 22:27:00 It is possible to unsolder the battery holder using a solder sucker, or solder wick, and solder a new one in, but it does require care and being used to doing this sort of thing. Ideally you need an antistatic mat to work upon, an instrument type iron properly earthed.

The other way and much safer way is to leave the broken holder in place, get hold of a battery holder off an old board, and solder flying leads to the old holder, then velcro the new holder somewhere convenient.

286532 2004-10-31 22:42:00 Thanks both of you for your replies.
Unfortunately I don't have a soldering iron and my eyesight is very poor and my hands aren't very steady. So I think the suggested repairs would be a bit beyond me. As long as my present arrangement is safe I will leave it as is for a day or two.
Perhaps you could give me a bit more advice. If I buy a ga 8IPE1000 PRO
m/b do you think I would manage to use my present Hard Drive? It's basicly the same as my present board but with a few more features.

286533 2004-10-31 22:49:00 What sort of different features? Are the chipsets the same? Aslong as the chipsets are the same then there shouldnt be a problem.

Ethernet might be a bit tricky depending on whether the same ethernet controller is used, seeing as there both made by Gigabyte one would expect the same controller. But nothing the correct drivers wont fix.

286534 2004-11-01 00:07:00 Crikey Jack, replacing the entire motherboard is a rather drastic solution just cos you busted the battery holder . :O

Do you really want to disconnect and haul out all the components then refit them all to the new mobo then probably have to reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows?

Surely there must be a local friendly PC specialist store that will do the soldering/refitting of another battery holder for you for a reasonable price?

If not, there must surely be some way of jury rigging the busted one with something a bit stronger/neater than sellotape? Is your battery mounted flat (ie parallel to the mobo) or is it vertical? I am not sure exactly which piece you have broken off but there must be some way of jury rigging it . Graham L, Metla or tweak'e might have some ideas . ;-)

Seriously I wouldn't let any computer repair person within 10 feet of my house with a soldering iron, let alone have a go at a PC .

Unless it is someone that you know can do it with _proven_ skills I'd shy away from this - it'd be well above what most computer stores would be capable of .

286537 2004-11-01 02:34:00 You should not need to go buying a new motherboard. That just comes with more hassle. I would seriously consider urgent ways of getting it looked at as some Sellotape may melt, and hence create more trouble.....

I would agree. But they'd actually be quite a few who can do so quite easily. For example, the one down in Wanganui perhaps ;-)

While your there, you can also take a holiday and stay in that awesome motel with spas, etc. Someone here will be able to tell you... ;-)
