286419 2004-10-31 02:57:00 I have begun using Windows 2000 Pro OS. It seems like a very stable system, but when I do run into an error, I feel helpless. I use Norton Utilities and anti-virus, but there seems to be times when Norton is unable to repair some error's. Is there a better program I can use to diagnose and/or repair the ocasional anomilies in this OS? Rommel (6339)
286420 2004-10-31 03:08:00 It depends what prob /error arises in 2k, or any version of Windows.

I wouldnt trust programs like Norton Utilities all time. Since programs like this can make things worse. And programs like that I would say wont always fix every problem, you may get.

You should be able to get out of most errors by hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL and clicking on the Task Manager button - you can usually "End the Task" of the offending program there - sometimes you need to press the "Log Off" button and logon again.

Then there are the errors where even explorer needs to be restarted and you can do this through Task Manager as well by using the Run command on the file menu.

286422 2004-10-31 05:59:00 What sort of errors are you having Rommel?

I have been using W2k for over two years now for around 12 hours a day and the only errors I have had were some memory dumps cause by a faulty stick of RAM . I find it very stable indeed .

I guess it depends on what programs you run too, though I have a mix of DOS, Windows 3 . 11 and more modern stuff and it all seems to coexist quite nicely . Norton Utilities in loaded (via Systemworks 2003) but I don't use much other than NAV .

I'm not into gaming though, so that may be helping me .

286423 2004-10-31 15:16:00 On several ocasions most of my programs locked up and I got an error message about "Entry point.....cannot be found in ...386..DLL..". This was easily repaired by re-installing DirectX 9. But I have also lost my ISP data and had to re-install all info. This is not so easy. I enjoy on-line gaming and have lost saved data to get into servers. Perhaps my problems are more Explorer related than OS. Rommel (6339)
286424 2004-11-01 01:12:00 Explorer or games related perhaps?

Try an alternative browser such as Opera and see what happens .

286425 2004-11-01 04:34:00 Right click the My Computer icon on your desktop and choose manage. Have a look through the Event Viewer for events around the time of the errors. This may (or may not) lead to some additional info on the errors and whates triggering them.

286426 2004-11-04 22:45:00 I looked through the Event Log, but didn't see anything that stood out. Actualy, I saw a lot of stuff that happened, but couldn't tell what was suposed to be happening. I teried using Opera instead of Windows Explorer, and so far, no errors or loss of data or settings. Online gaming involves network software and settings that are far beyond my limited expirience, but I'm monitoring my conections now, and maybe I can get more exact scenario info . Thanks for your time. I'll let you know what happens. Rommel (6339)
