286648 2004-11-01 03:45:00 My brother treated himself to a new laptop, and went on the Internet before setting up the firewall & anti virus. As luck would have it, he picked up a greeby which prevented access to the Internet , other than to a Porn site.
We ran Adaware-se & spybot 1.3, both found and removed several items.
Cleaned the registry but all to no avail. In the end we reformatted & did a clean install, which wasn't too much trouble as he hadn't installed any extra software.
The Laptop is an 'Asus' from Dick Smith & the OS is a customised version of XPHome. It came with a rescue CD.
Has any one any idea what this 'greeby' was, and the action to take in future?

286649 2004-11-01 03:50:00 Most probably something like sasser, or any of the other worms that can hit u when youre not using a firewall, and not patched. Spacemannz (808)
286650 2004-11-01 03:52:00 Enable the firewall before connecting to the net.

Purchase from an outlet that would have given some advice,or set the comp beforehand.

Anyone who onsells these things knows(or at least should know) they are hit with various worms, hijack and trojans within a minute or so of accessing the net when they are in an unpatched and un protected state.

286651 2004-11-01 04:02:00 Yeah but we can say these things as we are not the nebws who bought the item and plugged it unknowy, and M$ are not going to tell as they will lose $$$ as no comp will sell other wise.
comes back to knowledge, and you dont just get that handed to you on a plate.

but yeah if pos get someone to set it up, enable a good fire wall, and a good anitvirus prog and surf the net carefully. get the dreaded M$ patches too......:(

these things need a great huge bill board type warning pasted to the screeens for newbs to see, and understand what will happen if they go on the net without all the precautions taken....... :p

i have no idea how i have escaped all these horid things, as i was a newb who just plugged in and away too once....
:^O

hope you get it sorted.

286652 2004-11-01 04:26:00 the lappy from dse aye? when i got my desktop i did a antivirus when i got it, before i went on the net and it had 5 viruses Prescott (11)
286653 2004-11-01 04:47:00 I can't beleive that any retailer would sell a new Laptop without upgrading all the software in the thing. When I got mine( Asus) the retailer installed all the upgrades for windows, AV and spyware programs and gave me details of what other programs would need updating, but the unit was clean and safe when I got my grubby hands on it. Now I have set it up to AV everyday and I run spybot and Ad Aware every couple of days or after a long session online.
I would suggest that anyone should do the same and that way they should be relatively safe.
Good luck,
Rob

286654 2004-11-01 04:52:00 i don't think i have ever seen a new pc thats come with software that was upto date. considering the pc's often come in a box untouched, then its not to suprising. tweak'e (174)
286655 2004-11-01 04:57:00 I have found that the offer to unpack the laptop and apply all patches plus install the anti-virus and update it prior to handover has been gratefully accepted by everyone i have sold a laptop to.

Granted its a tiny amount compared to larger stores staffed by salesmen and students.......

Same here Metla. One day I should download and save all the AV updates so I don't have to download them for every PC I sell, using around 7MB per machine.

That is normal for retailers like Noel Leeming, Bond and Bond, etc but I would be mighty annoyed if I got a PC from a computer store that had not had all the updates and patches installed on it .

Heh, the other day I was in NL quizzing the sales guy over a lappie that I was looking at and asked him if it had SP2 and all the updates on it, knowing full well that it wouldn't . To his credit he had the grace to squirm and look rather embarrassed when I feigned shock after he had to admit that it didn't . ]:) :D
