286427 2004-10-31 02:42:00 hi there, i have an

Athlon XP 2500+ Barton running on an Asus A7V600
I recently tried overclocking it by turning the FSB up from 166 - 200 MHz
It seemed to run fine and without any extra voltage needs or fans, and it gave me a nice performance boost.

I now reads as a Athlon 3200+ and runs at 2200mhz instead of 1833mhz
(as it should) i know my motherboard isnt' the best at overclocking so i wont go any higher, and my motherboard automattically shuts down if the cpu temp goes too high to aviod damage to the system.

but i really want to know if i should get a better cpu fan than the original AMD fan. i know i probably should get on (e.g. thermaltake volcano 12) and im going to get a new psu with it but what kind of fan do i need. they are quiet expensive (40 - 90$) for different types of cpu fans and i just wanted 2 know what you would reccommend for my cpu as an overclocking fan. I dont just wanna go and get the best one there because of 'overkill' thanks

286428 2004-10-31 03:47:00 if you overclocl, it is highly recommended to get a new/better cpu fan due to the increase in heat, i say get a new one but im not too sure on which one though....... Prescott (11)
286429 2004-10-31 07:31:00 yea thats what im thinking.... it seems to work fine with the normal fan tho Nighthawk (5846)
286430 2004-10-31 08:14:00 whats temps are u getting? Prescott (11)
286431 2004-10-31 18:47:00 i dont know yet, haven't checked. can you find out the cpu temp without going into the bios? e.g. a program... i couldn't find nothing. Nighthawk (5846)

MBM 5, Everest, Sisoft Sandra...

Don't get a volcano 12. Has your motherboard got mounting holes? I'm too lazy to check...

286433 2004-10-31 19:13:00 If you originally bought an XP3200 you would have got exactly the same AMD heatsink and fan with it that you have with your XP2500. Unless you had to alter the voltage to get it to run as an XP3200, it won't run any hotter than a real XP3200. PaulD (232)
286434 2004-10-31 19:28:00 Your motherboard (same one I use, running a 2600+ Barton and a thermaltake silent-boost fan) came with a program called 'Asus Probe', also downloadable from the asus site. This will tell you the temps and also control the fan speeds if you set it up to do so. Cpu temps of around the 50 - 60 degree C mark are fine for that chip, though I would still prefer it to be a lot lower, with the real danger point being about 90 degrees. I have looked into watercooling and decided that apart from maybe building my own with a huge radiator and using peltiers it's just not worth the money. A decent sized fan in the side of the case ducted so the flow goes directly onto the cpu fan seems to be a much better way to go, and a WHOLE LOT cheaper ;) so thats the way I'll be going. As for overclocking ..... well I'll be leaving that to those a lot younger than I. This thing is way faster than me already |llus|oN (645)
286435 2004-11-01 02:27:00 wow thats quiet amuzing, why buy a higher end card like 3200 if a much cheaper card can do similar performance :-D

*installs asus probe* *ouch*

ok i open asus probe and the monitor (not the screen monitor) says:

CPU Temperature 48 C/118 F status OK
MB Temperature 34 C/ 93 F status OK
CPU Fan 3375 Status OK
Power Fan 0 Power Fan below threshold!!!
Chassis Fan 0 Chassis Fan below threshold!!!
+12V 12.288 status OK
+3.3V 3.232 status OK
VCore 1.744 status OK

thats what it says on the summary page... im a little worried and confused as to why it says my power and chasis fan aren't working...???

somebody help me! lol
