287198 2004-11-02 09:28:00 They will look at you and go " FPS " and then start talking about quantum science and how to split the atom five times ApeNz (4220)
287199 2004-11-02 09:40:00 I think they would have you beaten.... metla (154)
287200 2004-11-02 09:57:00 metla do you mean physically beat me up for wasting tax payers money or beat me in the game. ferrite (4221)
287201 2004-11-02 10:03:00 Beaten with a bat, . . . . but in a Benny Hill comedy kind of way,i could imagine them in shock as you powered down the nasa supercomputer so you could load up XP and then give farcry a work out .

Yep,i think they would have you beaten .

287202 2004-11-02 10:19:00 You would get better FPS on the NSA setup .

287203 2004-11-02 18:32:00 What Operating systems do these type of supercomputers run? 45South (4769)
287204 2004-11-03 00:31:00 The basic problem is that the game has not been written to run on a teraflop class computer . At best it would run on one processor of the array, so would run at the speed to be expected on a processor of that speed .

Supercomputers are used on super problems . Super problems are the only ones which can repay the huge amount of programming work needed to make use of the super computers .

Most of the hugely parallel supercomputers are using Linux . . . because it's there, it's free, and it works . NASA people built the first Beowulf cluster from a roomful of 486s stored before being sold as surplus . They didn't have money to buy a new big computer so they made one .

I'm not sure about the big Japanese one . . . they could well have written their own OS .

linux is often used.

unix is used a lot.

about half of the top 50 super computers run a custon OS that is basicly a very hacked version of unix.

287206 2004-11-03 01:31:00 Seeing as super computers dont have high end graphics cards you'd probably get worse performance than an average desktop PC. I guess you could use software rendering but it would look crap. Pete O'Neil (250)
