287263 2004-11-02 23:27:00 I have the bad luck to live in a "rural" area poorly served by Telecommunications companies (actually, its only 12km from the centre of Dunedin, but considered "rural" by all Telcos).

Unfortunately for me, Telecom wired our street with fiber optic cable, so Jetstream is not available, as it only runs over copper. Neither Telecom nor Vodafone offer cell phone coverage, so Xtra wireless isn't an option. No wireless Internet service providers provide a service, because I am in the shadow of a hill between here and the nearest wireless antenna.

I therefore use Ihug's Ultra Satellite service for broadband Internet. It works, but still requires a telephone, is high speed in only one direction, and does not allow more than one computer to use the link without using a proxy server (that unfortunately, only allows the proxying of SOME IP services).

Is anybody aware of any two-way high-speed Internet services that might be available in NZ as an alternative? I'm looking for one that would allow me to connect a router directly to my home wireless network so more than one computer could access the Internet at the same time.

I am aware that Telecom might offer such a service, but have you ever tried to get any information out of Telecom recently?

All suggestions greatfully received.

[Actually, PC-World, this subject might make a good article, entitled "What do I do if I can't get DSL or high-speed ground wireless data services?"]

287265 2004-11-03 02:38:00 Now I don't know much about fiber optic cable and how it is laid or how and what type of cable comes into your home. But if you have copper into your house then that is the same setup I have. I am in a rural area (Taieri plains) with fiber optic from my local exchange to the phone junction box at the end of my road. Here Telecom put in a device that converts the data from the fiber optic to copper. This is the best way I can describe this as I cannot remember the name of the device they installed. I have Jetstream and can get full speed no problem and I am 6 - 7 Km from local exchange. I also know Telecom installed these devices all over this area and Jetstream is available at a guess 12km from exchange as it is fiber optic from exchange to the phone junction box where it changes to copper.

Cheers
