287080 2004-11-02 07:40:00 My PC is making a strange high pitched squeel type of noise, and as far as I can make out it is happening at random?

The sound seems to be coming from inside the machine.

It is almost like a dog whistle kind of sound...

Does this sound like my hard drive is getting ready to retire???

The machine is about 1 and a half years old and I've had no problems with so far...

Athlon 2.5 - 512mb Ram - XP Home.

I havn't noticed the computer acting any differantly then normal since it started making the noise..

Any help. suggestions would be appreciated.

287081 2004-11-02 07:46:00 Most likely a fan, metla (154)
287082 2004-11-02 07:46:00 Shop it,

or take of the side panel, and see if it is one of the fans.

Just do either soon incase.

287083 2004-11-02 07:52:00 If it is a fan, is it easily fixed?

It doesn't seem to be the main fan at the back of the box.... so would it likely be a fan on the motherbaord or soemthing?

Anyone know any good/fast shops in the Dunedin area to take it to get fixed?

Thanks again.

287084 2004-11-02 07:52:00 Either your case fan, CPU fan or Power supply fan is screaming for a clean & some lubrication.
After a while the oil that lubricates the fans dries out.
You can either remove the fans & put a couple of drops of oil into the bearing which is hidden behind a sticker or sometimes a rubber plug.
Don't attempt to remove the fan from the Power Supply unless you are experienced (you might get a boot)
As metla says don't delay, if you aren't confident doing it yourself take it to a shop for a lube or replacement fan, 'cause if the CPU fan dies so does your computer

287087 2004-11-03 03:18:00 Update for anyone that cares . . . .

I took my machine into PC Gear this afternoon . . . .

After opening my machine we discovered that the heatsink and fan were very dirty, in fact caked with dust . . . and that my heatsink and fan was pretty small for my board .

So I replaced trhe 60mm fan with a 80mm fan and so far all is well . . .

PC Gear were very helpful and I would definately recommend them .
