288077 2004-11-04 23:52:00 Thinking of buying 512 DDR 400 Ram - Looking at the ACE brand - are they any good - i know that prob arnt the best but the price isnt that bad ( $145 ) ApeNz (4220)
288078 2004-11-05 00:24:00 What do you expect for $145? Come on if its cheap its generally crap, have you tryed a google for any reviews? If all you want to do is run it at DDR400 speeds then it should be fine, what motherboard/chipset do you have? The nForce2 is notoriously picky and hates cheap ram. Pete O'Neil (250)
288079 2004-11-05 00:28:00 i have a n force 2 mobo - gigabyte something something - what do you think is a good brand of ram that is not $300 , ApeNz (4220)
288080 2004-11-05 00:32:00 As long as your not overclocking then it will be fine, although the quality testing well be way down compared to higher range brands,so the likely hood of a defective stick is higher.

And as much as i don't want to disagree with Pete,i have stuffed dozens of nforce2 boards with cheap ram (legend, winbond,Rambo) and they all gelled perfectly....

288081 2004-11-05 00:43:00 I would personally avoid those. While they should be fine, I would personally tend to go for slightly bigger brands such as Legend (which I'm buying soon), Transcend, TwinMos, and the likes.... ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054)
288082 2004-11-05 00:49:00 I've found Kingmax good , should be sub $200 for 512/ 400 KatiMike (242)
288083 2004-11-05 00:50:00 I wouldn't consider Legend a good brand,i would put it in the lowest catagory along with Rambo.

Certainly they work as per design but i just sell em as generic.....

288084 2004-11-05 01:02:00 metla, how about Transcend Jetram? This is another option for me come buying time. Either better than the other?

While on the topic of Ram, in my new PC, I'm thinking of 1x 512DDR400 or 2x 256DDR400 in dual channel mode. Now, what difference in speed would that bring. In theory it should be twice as fast, but in practice i hear it's only 1.5 times faster. Correct? The biggest task I will ever do on my PC is tiny amounts of editing digital photos. Usually its just PressF1 and the likes. I think 512 would be way more than enough for me, but I just want to know whether I should dish out extra $20/30 for dual channel.

Cheers,

288085 2004-11-05 01:06:00 Metla, ive also stuff many different brands of memory into nForce boards without problem. But problems do exist and are well documents, granted many of the problems are had by morons who struggle to tell the difference between RAM and a male sheep.

Buying cheap no name ram such as "Ace" only heightens the chance that it will be crap, or even DOA. You dont have to spend a fortune on RAM as longer as your not an overclocker. Basic brands such as Transcend and Kingmax offer good value for money. It was only a few months ago that there were several horrow stories floating around about Twinmos and nForce2 mobos.

288086 2004-11-05 01:07:00 Yeah,I quite like Transcend ram and i would take it over Legend,Bear in mind this is my personal opinion and i dont have any data to back that up,but with a choice between the 2 i would instantly take the transcend.

As to Dual Channel, what motherboard are you running?,In many cases it offers no increase at all apart from benchmarks,If you can stretch the budget to cover it then i would definitly recomend the 2x256,but its not a life and death matter.
