Why would need fans for? Just put a bit of ice every once in a while.. or even better, just get a portable chilling stick thing. :)

287950 2004-11-05 03:40:00 Ice is not a good idea! It is made of water, and if that gets any impurities in it, then your MB dies. Try dry ice (frozen CO2) as that does not have a liquid state, and therefore cannot conduct electricity.

287951 2004-11-05 04:54:00 Looking at this thread through non-tired eyes it seems kind of stupid.

I'm not going to waste a PC (and heaps of my mum's hard earned oil). Anyway, my new case arrived today and my temps are waaaay lower even with no added fans.

Cheers George

287953 2004-11-05 05:29:00 Hmmm this has got me thinking.......

George,

If you submerge your motherboard in the oil, you could then move into overclocking the chip and getting some more speed out of it as the oil will dissapate the extra heat.

When the oil gets hot enough I'll have a piece of fish, one scoop of chips, two potato fritters and a pineapple fritter. Thanks Mark

287954 2004-11-05 07:19:00 Just out of curiosity what would the effect of oil have on the capacitors on the mobo?? bob_doe_nz (92)
287955 2004-11-06 01:24:00 It should keep them cool. :D Graham L (2)
287956 2004-11-06 01:25:00 and oily.... metla (154)
287957 2004-11-06 02:15:00 A lot of electrical switchgear is oil fiiled (transformer oil, very pure mineral oil) and there is often electronic circuit boards embedded.

The oill provides insulation (it is not a conductor of electricity when pure) and cooling, plus supression of any arcing from switch contacts.

Generally the correct oil is inert in effect on components such as capacitors and chips.
