2004-11-03 09:01:00 | Hi , going to encode video from old VHS tapes to my computer using a Leadtek TV2000XP Expert, TV Tuner/Video Capture Card + FM Tuner, PCI and am wondering how big would each hour of video be - i want a good quality and resoution but am wondering whether to get a DVD RW and a bigger HDD | ApeNz (4220) | |
2004-11-03 09:08:00 | depends entirely on what codec you use and at what bitrate, plus of course resolution. Someone here will be able to tell you what resolution VHS is,there is no reason to capture at a higher setting...and i do believe vhs is quite low res. I would suggest capturing with Huffy codec, then re-encoding down to VCD or SVCD,or not depending on if you get yourself a DVD writer....A large HD is always a bonus,as is a grunty PC....

2004-11-03 09:11:00 | i plan on encoding with mpeg2 - and getting a another 512 ram which will put me up to a gig and my cpu is fairy good , i just want to know how big each say hour of video is so that i can decide on buying a DVD RW or a bigger HDD | ApeNz (4220) | |
2004-11-03 09:16:00 | well....you can adjust the bitrate/quality of mpeg2,so it depends on your settings...... For optimal quality i would again suggest capturing with a lossless codec and then encoding down to desired format, rather then encoding/compressing on the fly.

2004-11-03 09:19:00 | and the size per hour will be ? - its a big factor for me as my 80gig hdd and around 25 VHS tapes with only a cd writer , yeah | ApeNz (4220) | |
2004-11-03 09:24:00 | roughly 100Mb per minute 1hr = 600Mb

2004-11-03 09:35:00 | Like i siad,you can adjust the settings,low bitrate equals low file size . anyhow,this may help . . net/LVG/ratesandsizes . html" target="_blank">neuron2 . net
