288619 2004-11-06 11:46:00 I have a 2Gb HD from and older pc which I got rid of way back (Win 95)
Was the boot drive.
Now on newer PC - XP and wish to install old HD as backup storage.
Any prob's installing ?
How do I get around the fact that it was the boot drive and may try to boot up with OS ?
Obviously will format it but bit concerned it may try to boot system before formatting and stuff up current registry.

288620 2004-11-06 13:04:00 Wont/shouldent boot up if you plug it in as slave and you havent changed any bios settings. Rob99 (151)
288621 2004-11-06 19:03:00 set it as slave and it should be fine

but if you want to be extra sure
why not jz unplug the current hd with your stuff on it
so the data can't be touched no matter what

um..i think i did that once..

288622 2004-11-07 00:48:00 hey there i did the exact same thing as you did, i didnt have any problems, i just had to rearange the ide cables and it was fine, i used it as a slave drive so u should too, i booted it up, it detected and worked fine, i then right clicked on the drive and formated, piece of cake :D

288623 2004-11-07 00:54:00 Of course if it's an older 5400 or worse 4800rpm drive your newer 7200rpm drive will slow down to the speed of the older one
I think thats correct, maybe someone else will confirm

288625 2004-11-07 01:04:00 Or maybe it was the ATA if the 7200 drive is using 133 & the older drive is only capable of 66 the the 133 will slow down if both are on the same IDE
If the older drive is on IDE2 it may not matter so much
Where is Pete O'Neil when we need him, he'll know for sure

288626 2004-11-07 01:52:00 IDE controllers since about 97 or 98 (roughly when PII can out) have been capable of independant device timing so long as both have been able to run in DMA mode. PaulD (232)
288627 2004-11-07 02:13:00 That's a good question. I've asked this previously and no, you won't get degraded performance if it's slave on the secondary IDE channel. It also won't boot so long as your BIOS tells your system to boot from Master Primary, usually C. Greg S (201)
288628 2004-11-07 02:14:00 this is probley getting a bit too technical for the orginal poster, just hook it up and find out, i did this and had no problems........ and my hdd was from a old p1 Prescott (11)
