288554 2004-11-06 10:08:00 Way back last century I entered Sand Fly country and freedom walked the Milford Track.

For three months prior to the walk I took some sort of 'vitamin' which stopped the Sand Flies from biting me. It worked well, no bites.

As I hope to re-enact the walk, can anyone sensibly suggest what pills I may have taken? I don't want to mess around with 'Dimp' or any other messy chemicals.

TIA. P.

288555 2004-11-06 10:12:00 Was it vitaman B. I know I was told to eat lots of marmite or vegemite, can't remember which, but surely a chemist would know? supergran (108)
288556 2004-11-06 10:15:00 I believe if you dose yourself up on vitamin B it helps.

Either that, take a saddle and ride the mosquito's instead ...

288557 2004-11-06 10:21:00 Half a kilo of fresh raw garlic each morning should do the trick, and ensure a secluded walk as well.
And for S.I. mossies, if you can't avoid them, at least try and shoot a couple for dog food and the trophy heads.

But I think marmites an urban myth passed around by those that are attractive to mossies. My wife is totally immune while I am a walking smorgasaboard. She doesn't do marmite or vitamin b.
I use citronella oil the real stuff from the chemist smell like lemons, not sticky and works good.

:^O

And don't forget the spurs . ;-) :D

Peter, may I suggest one absolutely essential item that must go in your pack is a tube of Ego's Soov (the one with the green writing on the box) . If a kamikaze mozzie does manage to embed its dining equipment in you I can guarantee that a dab of Soov applied immediately after the feast will prevent that maddening self-mutilating itch that lasts for days afterwards due to the anaesthetic and antiseptic ingredients . Well worth the $13 or so price for a tube .

Have a great walk . :-)

288563 2004-11-10 04:08:00 Peter - I've got the good oil for you ;)

Consumer Magazine latest issue recommends DEET (diethyltoluamide) as the best deterrent . Been around since 1946 .

A slow-release 40% formulation is the best choice .

I tried Vitamin B years ago and it seemed to work . The downside is that you had to start taking it at least 2 weeks before needing it .

Good luck .
