288481 2004-11-06 04:53:00 I have got a friends system and while i have it, thought it best to back up etc . . . before i do anything else . She doesn't really have anyway of backing up, as she has no writer, so it will be an added bonus anyway, so along with everything else, i thought i would back up her emails, as well, to a folder and copy them over to my flash drive and burn to cd . . .

Metla supplied a really good basic method of doing this awhile back and i have used it myself since (in preference to other ways of backing up e . g export, dbxtract) - basically just highlighting them and dragging them into a folder . This would be ideal for her and save any confusion with different formats/programs etc . . . as they would be readable immediately for her .

The problem is that she has multiple identically named emails - i . e "Hello", "hi" etc . . . as you can probably imagine .
Now when i have used this method myself using O . E 6 and win2000 or XP, it has automatically designated them a no . on the end and copied without my intervention, no probs -- however, in her case using O . E 5 and win 98, i get the message of "there already being a file named that" and the usual "do i want to replace it" option - leaving no way to copy them auto . So i have to manually rename them as i copy them into the folder one at a time!

Is there anyway that anybody knows that i could rename them auto as before?
Or is this a feature in maybe O . E 6? As it works using O . E6 on a win2000pro or XP pro system or is it an O . S specific feature?

Cheers

What seems to be the same method of copying them is mentioned in this thread

288482 2004-11-06 05:40:00 Why not just backup the entire folder?

Start
--> Find
--> Files & Folders
Search for:
Outlook Express
It _is_ in a Hidden/System folder so make sure those are included in the search.

It'll contain several .dbx files IIRC - Backup the whole Folder :-)

Hi Chill, yes i have already done that just in case, but i want to back up the other way more for her, as a readable reference/copy kind of thing - so she can just put the cd in and open them and read/find them, without having to convert any formats etc... i just think it will be less confusing for her to have them like that - even though she will have a copy of the whole folder if need be.
I hope that makes sense?

Cheers

I really wonder if its specific to the O.S or the programs? As i could upgrade to I.E 6 sp1-O.E6, but don't want to bother if it will be the same outcome.

288484 2004-11-06 07:01:00 AFAIK it'll be the same regardless.

No format change should be needed - only an import into OE which takes a few seconds.

288485 2004-11-06 08:41:00 Arhh i think we are on 2 different wave lengths Chill ;-) . I have already got the folder backed up in . dbx format as you said, so worst scenario, if, for any reason, its necessary, i can "Import" the files back in .
At the moment though, O . E is all working o . k etc . . .
But as a backup/copy for her, i want to have them on cd listed in their folders in the . eml format as well, so she just clicks them and they open immediately in O . E .

I hope that makes sense? Sorry to confuse ?:| things .

This works "normally"(well has in XP/O . E6 & 2000pro/O . E6) with duplicate email subjects, as they are just by default given a number on the end as you drag them into the folder .

Basically i am just saving them in the way you would if you were to save them using the "save as" function, however, instead of individually having to "save as" - this does them all at once .

Cheers Chill :-)
