288048 2004-11-05 00:17:00 As an avid football fan (the round ball) I subscribe to a site that offers matches via streamed video (WMV format), although it is also possible to download the WMV files at a later date.

Currently I use ASF Recorder to capture the streamed video to disk. I then use TMPGEnc to convert the WMV file to MPG. However, I have recently been having problems with this, where the sound will stop after around 10 minutes - the WMV file has sound throughout! This step is very slow - 25 hours to convert 1h 50min of video on a P4 2.8GHz with XP Pro SP2.

Once converted, I burn to DVD using ULead DVDMovieFactory.

Is the method I am using the most efficient? It takes me 2 to 3 days to get to see a game after it has been played!

Are there any other tools for converting from WMV to MPG?
Do I need MPG for burning to DVD or should I be using some other codec?
If so, how do I go about it?
Does the missing sound in the MPG indicate that the WMV fle is corrupt (even though the sound can be heard through the entire game) or is there a problem with TMPGEnc?

TIA

288049 2004-11-05 00:42:00 Nerovision 3 / Nerovision express (which is a nero package), which just came out might do. You can make a DVD, and it can import asf, wmv, dv, mpg, vob, mp4, and a few others. Not too sure if it needs a serial to enable the option.

I would say it'll convert to dvd/mpeg format once u go to burn it to dvd.

I havent got any wmv files to test it with atm tho. Does your P4 support HT??

If u d/l the patch for Moviefactory, which is meant to speed things up by 32% when burning, it shouldnt take 25 hrs. Which version of Moviefactory have u got??

3 www.ulead.com

2.0 SE www.ulead.com which has an HT patch so it's 32% faster. (from AVI to mpeg), not too sure if its the same for wmv to mpeg.

or 1.0 www.ulead.com

288051 2004-11-06 02:15:00 An update to the issue of the sound stopping after 8 - 10 minutes. I extracted the sound using the Free version of TMPGEnc and it extracted the whole 2 hours. Every attempt at extracting the sound via TMPGEnc 2.5 Plus results in it cutting out after 10 minutes, so it looks like a TMPGEnc issue. Miami Steve (2128)
288052 2004-11-06 02:41:00 Have you bought the 2.5 version? Trial copies run without a serial number sometimes don't work completely. They have this funny idea that people should pay for their work. :D Graham L (2)
288053 2004-11-06 02:49:00 It's a 30 day trial, then the MPEG2 encoding engine is disabled. There is no mention of any limitations during the trial period. Part of the reason I have created this thread is to find out if there are any alternatives. I realise that there are not going to be any free encoders (due to the MPEG2 licensing), so I want to investigate all avenues before investing in a solution.

Cheers
