Is it possible/likely to damage the DVD/CDRW drive by carrying the laptop around with a disk in the drive.

The Laptop pauses for several minutes during boot after the devices have been detected but before windows loads and sometimes the DVD/CDRW is not available in Windows. If the drive is removed the laptop boots normally.

I would very much doubt it.

289174 2004-11-08 00:43:00 Does the laptop pause when you have the disc in the drive? It may be reading the disc to see if it is a boot disc. Check your BIOS settings and select boot from HDD first.

If the drive is not being detected properly it may be faulty. Is it still under warranty?

Yes it is set to boot HDD first

The drive is being detected by the bios but the system pauses several minutes before moving to the next screen

Yes, but it was replaced 3 months ago with the same problem.

Well that doesn't sound good. I take it you've checked with IBM for firmware updates or conflict issues? You may have to get another replacement if it's still under warranty.
