289051 2004-11-07 09:09:00 This friend of mine bought a secondhand computer with XP Pro installed from Trade & Exchange. After using it for about 2 months, and somehow, Windows started to remind him to activate his Windows and now finally Bill Gates stops him from using his Operating System. Of course, he has realised that the copy of XP he has is pirated. He therefore bought an original copy of XP this morning.

Now, can he just use the Serial number from his new original XP to activate his computer? If the answer is yes, how can he change the serial number?

Or, he has to reformat the HDD and reinstall Windows and go through all the hastle of finding the relevant drivers, etc?

Cheers

And it failed.

As "real" pirated versions of XP dont need activation. As theyre corp versions.

289056 2004-11-07 20:15:00 Basically, there are two types of XP...Home and Professional.

Right-click "My Computer" , then properties. This will tell you which version.

I am sure you cannot use the number for one type, to activate the other. But if they are the same type , then yes you can utilise the brought number.

If I recall, you just have to put your registration code into the system....
start - run

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
