288971 2004-11-07 05:25:00 I am experiencing some difficulties with my home pc. Its my network. I have had this problem before and solved it (have no idea how) or windows solved it for me. What is happening is that I am getting zero connectivity. Windows XP (service pack 2) says I have limited or no connectivity and when I try to repair the connection automatically it fails miserably, saying "cannot repair connection" (gives a lot of info doesn't it?). I used the command line to release the ipconfiguration (>ipconfig /release) and it released. Then I renewed (>ipconfig /renew) and said it couldn't contact the DHCP server. I have no lights on my ethernet plug (onboard. Gigabyte GA7N400-L) and no light for my port on my router. I know the problem isn't with my router because I am typing this on my other PC. I tried changing hard drives and installing win2ksp4 and have the same problem. I have had zero success with networking in linux on my pc EVER.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

PS Its not a faulty cable.

288972 2004-11-07 05:58:00 Are u using firewire? Coz that used to create probs with a NIC.

As XP sees it as a NIC.

And did u use the wizard or enter the ips in manually? And how many PC's are we talking about?

288973 2004-11-07 06:16:00 No connection light means:

- Faulty cable
- Faulty router
- Faulty network card

Since the router works, the cable is not faulty, we must assume it is your network card.

Before you head to my online shop to buy a new one ;), open up the case and check the card is securely seated in the PCI slot, and is screwed in.

If the card is integrated into the motherboard, you will most likely have to buy a new PCI card (usually around $20-25).

But one tip for all is: If the connection light isn't on, don't even bother looking at software settings.
