289162 2004-11-08 02:41:00 Some DVD writers are firmware upgradable to write dual layer, even thought they are advertised as only single layer writers.

I don't think these drives are reviewed for their capability to write dual layer dvds, so they actually miss out on a positive review.

Do a google for dual layer firmware upgrades on the single layer dvds. Might be worth it if you wanted dual layer. Dual layer are more future proof, so it should be worth looking at.

289163 2004-11-08 03:15:00 Thanks for all the info.

Anyone knows whether DVD writers are capable of 'multi-session' recordings like CD writers do?

Thanks

289164 2004-11-08 03:21:00 Cant see why not as they can burn cds as well as dvd's. If u have a program like Nero.

Or whatever program which has a multi-session option in it

289165 2004-11-08 05:05:00 I also just got a DVD writer a week ago, and after reading all the reviews went for the NEC ND-3500A. My second choice was the Pioneer 108D. There are a variety of reviews out there comparing the Pioneer and the NEC and it seemed that they are pretty similar overall with NEC having a slight edge. There is a review here (www.extrememhz.com) of the NEC 3500A. NEC branded drives tend not to have official firmware updates available as fast as Pioneer does which may or may not influence you.

The OEM software that comes with the NEC ND-3500A is Nero OEM suite which consists of Nero Express 6, InCD4, Nero Vision Express 2-SE, Nero Showtime, Nero Media Player, Nero Toolkit and Nero Cover Designer.

I haven't tried burning any DVD's yet, so I can't comment on the multisession and I also use K3b for my CD/DVD's instead of Nero.

289166 2004-11-08 06:48:00 In regards to multisession, If your using a RW disk it shouldn't be a problem, neither with a RAM disk if your writer supports the format.

I am however aware that a dual layer disk MUST be burned in it's entirety regardless of how much data is to be placed on the disk, due to the layering and refractivity. FAIL TO DO THIS AND YOU HAVE A COASTER.

289168 2004-11-08 09:43:00 Check page 8, 15,16,17,18 of the article linked above in this thread for a review on the liteon drive. Put it this way of of 8 drives tested it wasn't in the top 3. Exwesty (5639)
289169 2004-11-08 19:31:00 Can anyone recommend a unit that isn't dual-layer compatible please? Greg S (201)
289170 2004-11-08 23:40:00 My Optorite DD0402 is bloody marvelous! Only burns at 4x, but I cant find any faster Discs to justify an upgrade.

Since the Firmware Upgrade Ive had nothing but perfect burns every time on Princo Disc's (Got them cheap from supercheappc.biz - 50 pack for $35ish).

Chill.

289171 2004-11-08 23:45:00 Thx. I've decided on an LG GCC 4521bkk - only $85. I don't need the dvd write facility, so it's allowed me spare cash to get another hard drive. Greg S (201)
