288798 2004-11-07 02:49:00 I have a system here that a friend gave me to look at (you fix computers dont you, i have this problem . . . . . . )




the system dials up OK, it connects ok .

it hasent got DNS .

if i ping www . ihug . co . nz i get unknowen host .

if i ping 203 . 109 . 252 . 42 its all good .

have done a full scan for virus with not result .

have cheched all internet setting and find no problems .




where to for here??


system is a HP box running XP-home SP1

Doesnt when you dial in the ISP give the computer the DNS's to use? Or am i barking up the wrong tree

Doesn't matter. I've seen plenty of firewalls leave their hooks in both when disabled, and even after they've been uninstalled.

What version of Windows?

I'd try uninstalling the firewall completely, then:

If it's WXP, try going to a command prompt (Start --> Run --> cmd --> OK)

And type in "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without the "

Hit enter, reboot, try that.

Looks that way.

They give you the servers to use for it, that doesn't mean the processes which query those services are able to talk to them.

288807 2004-11-07 04:05:00 have removed 126 spyware items . . . . .

have reset the TCP/IP using that cool netsh command .



we now have DNS to the command prompt level .

when i do ping www . ihug . co . nz i get responce .

still no DNS for with in IE .



I am going out about now will get back in to it later tonight . . . . . .
