289439 2004-11-08 10:41:00 there's $10 difference between the hd i'm buying
only differnce is their buffer size

would spending the extra $10 really improve the performance
or is that just making the hd more future proof.. say..when i install it into a faster system (eg. 3GHz)

289440 2004-11-08 10:45:00 From what I've read the average user won't notice the difference & it greatly depends on what brand you buy
Some drives with 2MB outperform those with 8Mb
But hey for only $10
PC World did an interesting comparison a couple of months back if you have any old issues

289441 2004-11-08 10:46:00 What's $10 in the grand scheme of things?

I say do it.

289442 2004-11-08 10:46:00 ...Hi buddy , maybe you're buying a WD HDD ...
Depends on your needs I s'pose , personally I'd go for 8MB buffer ...
Did you see the great "Clash" videos on C4 ??
I digress , 8 MB is heaps better , spend the [few] $$ :)

289443 2004-11-08 10:46:00 Nope,No faster in the real world, and nioeffect on future proofing.

But even if the advantage of the larger buffer is only really apperent on paper or while running a bench you might as well spend the extra $10 and buy the better drive.

Very useful to have the eight, if you ever buy it a mate, and use it in a RAID.

289445 2004-11-08 10:51:00 Yep,But in the grand scheme of things very few people have a raid configuration. metla (154)
289446 2004-11-08 11:04:00 Metla,

Totally OT to this thread would you happen to have lying around a voltage stabiliser/regulator for a (UGH) Dell presision 220.

I have a scsi tape, and a couple of scsi drives, If i can get a regulator, it will make a play, gateway, file server, and backup unit. put 2 x 1G 133 cpus and some rambus.

Toy.
