289459 2004-11-10 23:40:00 Another question about RAID 0.

I have read that there is a risk of failure with it, and your drives will screw up or something.

Is it any more risky than running a normal hard drive without RAID 0?

Going to buy a new computer soon. Looking at a dell one, is that ok? Im just worried about the RAID 0 having a higher risk of failure.

289460 2004-11-10 23:54:00 Why would you buy a Dell?,its the brand names of the components that matter, and i have yet to open up a dell and find anything but the lowest quality everything,Especially motherboard....which not only has a huge impact performance, but stability and life expectency. And i bet you could get an Asus based system for around the same budget your going to spend.....Plus if it has any issues you don't get stuck on the phone to some rice farmer in Dirt Village mud hut Indonesia.... metla (154)
289461 2004-11-10 23:57:00 RAID itself doesnt do any damage to the drives, its mearly the fact that you have 2 drives acting as one large drive. Data is split over both drives, so if one drive fails the data on the other drive is useless. By using 2 disks you automatically double the chance of failure, purely because both drives have to work for to have access to the data.

If i was buying a Seagate harddrive i would save the extra money and buy the drive with 2mb of cache. But if i was buying a Western Digital i would definatly make the jump to the 8mb version. WD's firmware take good advantage of the extra cache. Dont know much about Maxtor, but would sucpect they are much the same as Seagate.
