289567 2004-11-09 03:04:00 Every now and then AVG put out a big update file and my theory is that it is something to do with updating the engine, especially the ones where we are required to reboot after the install .

Or, all the updates are condensed into one reference file to be nice and tidy before they start issuing all the little updates in between .

I may be away with the fairies, of course, but that's a whole other topic . :p :D

You can actually do this in the full version of AVG, both 6 and 7. It's just a thing they do to try and make you buy the full version. After all, it is free and they need some income to keep the company going right? If you want the advanced scheduler you actually need to pay for it in this case.

I think the 3MB+ download was a program update - they happen from time to time, and it keeps the incremental updates small.

Yeah, but you just wanna wonder why a company lets 1,000,000 people a month download a free AV system, and then maintain it, all for free? Same question goes for gmail. This might be cynical but my question is whats their real motivation. Its got to be e-surveilance surely....what with their processes running 24/7, undettered access to the net, etc etc. I am the only worried one?

Its not free in the EU.

Its the same deal as the free zone alarm.

And Waikato sold at under production cost.

Brand promotion as a loss leader and a tax write off , to aid sales of the commercial product in and out of the EU.
