290103 2004-11-10 02:31:00 hi there, i am building a new desktop, with an athlon 64 3000+, gigabyte k8ns, 512mb pc3200 ddr 400 ram, 80gig ata hard drive, cdrw/dvd drive, nvidia fx5200 128mb ddr graphics card. DO you think that a 400w power supply would be adequate, or could i go for a 350w instead or a 450w?
Thanks in advance

290104 2004-11-10 02:37:00 You could try using this claculator to add up your system requirements:

www.jscustompcs.com

But as general rule, doesn't pay to skimp on the power supply.

290105 2004-11-10 02:39:00 A 350w would probably be adequate but more is always better - saying that - ensure the power supply is a good brand - this will be feeding your hungry components so don't get a cheap one or you could be spending a lot more in the long run...

Go for a good brand and spend as much as your budget allows re: wattage.

Good brands are Thermaltake, Antec etc...

I can recommend Thermaltake.

290106 2004-11-10 02:46:00 It all depends on the brand of PSU, a cheap 400w Hyena probably wouldnt be able to handle it where as a Enermex 350w probably would. Thermaltake arent that great, Enermex or Antec are far superior. Pete O'Neil (250)
290107 2004-11-10 02:47:00 i have found a case that has a 450w power supply, would that be adequate, it is from c1 computer, called an f1 computer case Tux (606)
290108 2004-11-10 03:00:00 What brand is the powersupply? The wattage of a powersupply really isnt that important. A 350w Enermex is far far superior to a cheap 550w Hyena. Pete O'Neil (250)
290109 2004-11-10 03:17:00 i have no idea what brand it is, i know that the case brand is a PSI and this is the link www.c1computer.co.nz
Thanks

290110 2004-11-10 03:19:00 Without knowing the brand i wouldnt touch the PSU, if you liked the design of the case you could buy a replacement PSU. Pete O'Neil (250)
290111 2004-11-10 03:20:00 i think i will just stick with the current psu for the moment, then when i get more dosh, get something better Tux (606)
290112 2004-11-10 03:24:00 Cheap PSU's are more prone to crapping out than a quality brand PSU. If the PSU craps out you run the risk of destroying everything its connected too. You wont be able to claim the damage under warrenty, you'll just end up with a collection of keychains. Buying a cheap PSU is just asking for trouble, but its your choice be warned.

If you want a cheap case/PSU combo with a semi-decent PSU have a look at the iCute cases and the Aopen cases. There not particularly stylish but the quality is alot better.
